Saints ground Owls in final non-conference game

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Carly LaFerriere and Zoe Howe each posted hat tricks to help lead Flagler College past Southern Connecticut State University, 14-11, in its second straight non-conference matchup victory at the Flagler Lacrosse Field Saturday afternoon.

The Saints finished non-conference play with a 6-5 record. The Owls drop to 1-3.

Flagler held a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the offense turned up the pressure, turning in an eight-goal frame. The eight goals are the second highest in a single quarter since Flagler posted nine in the first quarter against Ave Maria on February 12.

Flagler got its first two goals of the quarter from Howe and Ally Miller, and the Owls responded with two of their own goals. Following that, Flagler rattled off six of the final seven goals of the quarter to open up a 10-4 lead at halftime. During the quarter, Sydney Onega scored twice, LaFerriere scored once and Kaitlyn Bush, Sophia DeSimone and Katelyn Trainor also added one.

The Owls hung around for the entire game, never letting the lead get above seven. They made a late push to get back in the game, scoring three goals in the final six minutes to cut the lead to three, but Saints' Alex Eubanks held firm in net and made crucial saves down the stretch to preserve the lead.

As a team, the Saints forced seven of the Owls 11 turnovers, with seven different players each causing one. Flagler dominated Southern Connecticut in the draw circle, winning 21 of the 29 draw controls. LaFerriere and Jordan Green each corralled five draw controls, while Trainor controlled four and Onega and Kenzie Dillon secured three.

The Owls were led by Karlie Rowe, who posted a hat trick of her own and handed out an assist. Bayleigh Takacs added two goals and picked up four ground balls.

Flagler begins Gulf South Conference play on Saturday, March 26 at Young Harris College with a 1 p.m. start time.
