ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College opened its season with a pair of extra-inning games, losing the first 4-3 in 10 innings and then winning the second 3-2 in 10 innings, against Queens University of Charlotte Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field.
Both teams opened their seasons this afternoon.
In the second game, with runners on first and second base in the bottom of the 10
th inning,
Luke Welborn's single through the hole between third and short gave enough time for
John Fiorenza to score the game winning run.
The Saints plated two unearned runs in the eighth inning to take a 2-1 lead, and then the Royals tied it in the ninth on a lead off home run by Nick Brassington, his second solo shot of the game.
Anthony Nofi (1-0) posted the first win of the season for Flagler as he tossed a scoreless inning and two-thirds with five strikeouts.
Seth Wysocki,
Jake Hill, and
Gavin Barnell also pitched in the game. Wysocki started and fanned four in 4.2 innings.
Welborn collected a pair of singles and drove in a run.
Matthew Burke had the other Saints hit.
Tanner Jacobson (0-1) took the loss as he tossed 2.1 innings in relief. He was the pitcher who started the 10
th inning and was responsible for the two runners, including the one who scored. Justin Offschanka started for Queens, and he scattered two hits over six scoreless innings.
Brassington went 4-for-4 with two home runs. Christian Maggio finished with a pair of singles.
In the opener, the Royals got back-to-back RBI doubles from Nick Melton and Mason Pickard in the 10
th inning to take a 4-2 lead.
Flagler got one run back in the bottom half as
Donovan Garcia led off the inning with a walk and then came around to score on
Coy Phillips' two-out single to left-center.
Nick Charleson (1-0) picked up the win in relief for Queens. He tossed three shutout innings and Daniel Bagwell pitched the 10
th and allowed one run on two hits to earn the save.
Brassington went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, and two runs batted in.
Gabriel Partridge (0-1) pitched five innings in relief and surrendered two runs on six hits. He struck out six batters.
Gage Voorhees started and allowed just one hit over five innings, but allowed two runs. He also fanned six batters.
The Saints pounded out 12 hits. Welborn,
Myles Colangelo, and Phillips each had two hits. Fiorenza belted a solo home run in the third inning.
The same two teams meet at noon on Sunday, weather permitting.
