Saints sweep doubleheader on Saturday

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Mason Gray went 5-for-10 with a triple to help lead Flagler College to a doubleheader sweep of Eckerd College, 8-7 and 3-2, Saturday afternoon at the Turley Complex.

Flagler evened its record at 5-5. Eckerd dropped to 4-6.

In the opener, the Saints took an early 3-0 lead and then took a 5-2 lead on Ashton Thomas' two-run double in the sixth inning.

Four consecutive hits to start the eighth would lead to an 8-2 Flagler lead. Gray hit an RBI triple and Donovan Garcia followed with an RBI double.

The Saints needed those runs as the Tritons pushed four across in the bottom of the ninth. Tyler Cox struck the biggest blow, a three-run home run to right field to make it a one-run game.

Gabriel Partridge, in his fourth inning of relief, struck out the last batter to end the game. Dylan Faulkner (1-0) tossed the first five and allowed two runs on five hits. He struck out five.

Gray went 3-for-5 with the triple, two runs batted in and he scored a run. Thomas went 2-for-4 with the double and three RBI. Garcia hit a single, a double, scored two runs and drove in two more. Matthew Burke collected two singles and scored a run.

Jake Sanderson (0-1) took the loss on the hill for Eckerd. He surrendered three runs on two hits and walked four batters in one-plus innings pitched.

Dimerson Nunez and Mitch Donofrio paced the 14-hit attack with three singles apiece. Nunez scored two runs.

In the second game, Myles Colangelo's pinch hit single in the seventh scored two runs and gave Flagler a 3-2 lead.

That was just enough for Seth Wysocki (1-1) to earn his first win in the Crimson & Gold. He allowed just two runs on three hits in seven innings of work. Ryan Ayrey came on and tossed two shutout innings to preserve the win and was credited with a save.

Gray, Burke, Brad Vondruska and Colangelo each finished with two singles.

Gray's base hit in the second knocked in Trey Newland, but Eckerd took the lead on a two-run single by Mikey Burke in the fifth.

Nunez had two of the Tritons' three hits.

Kyle Durham (0-1) surrendered two runs on two hits in 1 1/3 innings of relief and was credited with the loss.

Flagler heads to No. 1 (Collegiate Baseball Preseason Top 40) the University of Tampa on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. contest.
