ST AUGUSTINE –
Jaziana Mathis posted a game-high 26 points as the Flagler College fell to the Clayton State in overtime by a score of 70-68 in a Peach Belt Conference matchup.
The Saints fall to 11-14 overall and 5-9 in conference play. The Lakers improve to 13-10 overall and 7-8 in PBC play.
Clayton State posted the first six points of overtime, a lead that they would not relinquish. With 9.8 seconds left, the Lakers missed two free throws.
Sharale McCormick grabbed the rebound and took it coast to coast but was met at rim by Taniya Patrick, who's block sealed the game for the Lakers.
With 3:01 left in the game, Clayton State's Timi'a Swanson was called for an intentional foul and Mathis sank the two free throws to give the Saints a 59-57 lead. On the ensuing possession, McCormick hit a layup to extend the lead to four.
Following a Flagler timeout with 11 seconds left,
Tori Pearce was fouled by Clayton State's Raven Riley. Pearce would tie the game after hitting one of two free throws. Clayton State would fail to convert on their final possession to send the game to overtime.
Pearce supplied 22 points 12 rebounds and nine assists. McCormick added 12 points and five rebounds. Mathis also added eight rebounds and five steals.
Audrey McElhaney led the way for the Lakers, posting 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Flagler returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Augusta University for a 1:30 p.m. tipoff.
