Men's tennis sweeps #14 Auburn Montgomery

Piibor era begins with upset

ST. AUGUSTINE — The Jonas Piibor era is off to a hot start.

In the Flagler College men's tennis head coach's first regular-season match, his Saints showed up and showed out as they cruised to an upset, 7-0, sweep of 14th-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery Saturday morning at the Flagler Tennis Center.

"It was really exciting to start off our regular season today," Piibor said. "AUM is a solid and well-coached team. I thought we did a good job of playing fundamental tennis, which is what we have been working on. We take areas and learning experience from this one so that we can continue to improve as a team."

"I also want to thank the people who showed up today. We really like the support you bring us."

In doubles, the Saints' top-doubles pair were narrowed in a tiebreaker before Nikita Tatyanin and Jagger Ong-Patzwald knotted the doubles' point on court two. It was the duo of Philipp Lemken and Cedric Holzmann, who muscled out the 6-4 victory to secure the doubles' point and go up, 1-0.

Oscar Del Granado, Petr Cervinka, Lemken, Tatyanin, Holzmann all won in straight sets — with Lemken clinching the victory — and Ong-Patzwald grinding out a three-set, tie-breaking victory to secure the impressive sweep for the Saints' first victory over nationally-ranked AUM (3-2).
