McCormick scores 19 points in season opener

WISE, Va. – Sharale McCormick scored a game-high 19 points in Flagler College's season opening 63-55 loss to Anderson University in the PBC-SAC Challenge Saturday afternoon at the David J. Prior Convocation Center.

Anderson evened its record at 1-1. Flagler concludes the tournament on Sunday against the host school, the University of Virginia's College at Wise, at 1 p.m.

The Trojans used a 13-3 run in the last five minutes to break open a two-point lead. Nelliah Wilson made the second of two free throws to begin the spurt with 1:54 left in the third quarter.

The Saints pulled to within four (57-53) when Taylor Gardner made the second of her two free throw attempts with four minutes left in the game, but could not get closer to tie or take the lead.

Gardner ended with 12 points as she was a perfect 3-for-3 from long range. N'Mya Pierce came off the bench to provide seven points and a team-high five rebounds. Buse Utku tallied four assists.

Brittney Stafford led Anderson with 18 points and four assists. Diamond McDowell recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Britney Bailey added 10 points and eight rebounds. Wilson grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Trojans made 18-of-26 from the free throw line, which included 6-of-8 in the fourth quarter alone. Anderson only made three field goals in the fourth quarter with its last coming from Wilson with 6:56 left to go.
