WISE, Va. –
Taylor Gardner and
Sharale McCormick combined to score 34 points and grab 14 rebounds in Flagler College's 66-57 loss to the University of Virginia's College at Wise in the PBC-SAC Challenge Sunday afternoon at the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
UVA Wise remained undefeated at 2-0 while Flagler fell to 0-2. The Saints visit Florida Tech on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Melbourne.
The Saints trailed 39-22 at the half and the deficit grew to as many as 18 as late as the fourth quarter. Flagler went on a 15-5 run over five-plus minutes in the fourth quarter to cut the Cavaliers lead to eight (61-53).
Sara Pedraza sank a 3-pointer with 2:37 left in the game to cap the run. The Saints could not get any closer.
Gardner scored 17 points, grabbed seven rebounds and tallied three assists for Flagler. McCormick added 17 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. She was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Pedraza scored all 10 of her points in the third and fourth quarters.
Maddie Erickson grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
Nia Vanzant led three Cavs in double-figures with a game-high 18 points and she added six rebounds as well as two blocked shots. Josie Hester contributed 16 points and five rebounds while Katlin Burger came off the bench to supply 10 points, six rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and two steals.
