Simmons’ season high 16 kills powers Saints on Saturday

JACKSONVILLE – Audrey Simmons recorded a season high 16 kills to help lead Flagler College to a 3-1 (25-19, 25-13, 16-25, 25-19) victory over Edward Waters University in a non-conference volleyball match Saturday afternoon at the Adams-Jenkins Community Sports and Music Complex.

Flagler raised its overall record to 12-7 while Edward Waters dropped to 18-9.

Simmons finished the match with a .355 hitting percentage as she had five errors on 31 swings. She added five total blocks to her line. Jordan Berglin added nine kills and had five digs while Arianna Lopez and Molly Boyd each added seven kills. Kennedy Muff tallied 36 assists and collected nine digs. Edie Lamoreaux paced the defense with 10 digs. Sidney Hogan had three service aces.

Fatima Ramirez led the Lady Tigers with 14 kills and 11 digs. Mataiya Barber tallied 28 assists while Catherine Richards finished with five total blocks.

The Saints used a quick 5-0 spurt to take a 16-10 lead in the first set. Simmons and Lopez had kills in the run, but the Lady Tigers had three miscues. Flagler used a balanced attack in the first set as five players had two or more kills.

Flagler stormed out to an 8-2 lead in the second set and coasted to the win. Simmons hit .714 with six kills and one error on seven swings. The Saints hit .452 as a team.

Edward Waters used an 9-3 run to take a commanding 18-11 lead in the third set. Simmons hit .400 with four kills for Flagler.

After opening the fourth set down 5-1, the Saints rallied back and used a 7-0 run midway through to take a 20-15 lead. Four consecutive hitting errors by the Lady Tigers coupled with a Muff ace keyed the spurt. She tallied 10 assists in the fourth set alone. Ramirez hit .700 with eight kills and one error on 10 swings for Edward Waters.

Flagler heads to Young Harris College on Friday (Oct. 28) for a match at 6 p.m.

NOTE: Coaching Edward Waters today was former Flagler All-American Taja Valmyr. She played for the Saints from 2014 to 2017. Valmyr also serves as an assistant on the men's volleyball team.
