Saints use balanced attack to tame Jaguars

ST. AUGUSTINE—Tori Pearce posted a game-high 23 points to lead Flagler College to a 73-60 victory over the Augusta University in a Peach Belt Conference matchup Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.

With the win, the Saints improve to 10-8 overall, and 4-4 in PBC play. The Jaguars drop to 9-4 on the season and 2-5 in conference play.

"I thought our girls did a great job being disciplined with the game plan," Said head coach Mo Smith. "I was really proud of their effort and focus today."

Flagler took control of the contest early, starting the game on a 7-0 run, and never trailed in the game.

In the second quarter, the Jags cut the lead to three, courtesy of a layup from Michaela Lane, but the Saints responded by getting the lead back up to double digits with seven more unanswered points. Flagler entered halftime with a 35-23 lead.

The largest lead the Saints would establish all game came in the fourth quarter, with just under three minutes left when they were given a 16-point lead after a Jaziana Mathis jumper.

Pearce notched her eighth double-double of the season with 11 rebounds. She added a game-high seven assists and tied her career-high with three blocked shots. Mathis turned in 19 points to go along with four rebounds and four assists. Sharale McCormick posted 12 points and six rebounds. Sadie Russell posted six points, pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds and handed out a season high six assists.

As a team, the Saints shot 40.9 percent from the field and grabbed a season high 49 rebounds. Flagler's defense limited Augusta to 31.6 percent shooting.

The Jaguars were paced by Kennedi Manning who turned in 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Autumn Phillips added 11 points and four rebounds. Kiera Howard finished with eight points, six rebounds and a team-high six assists.

Flagler returns to action next Wednesday, Jan. 26 when they travel to Morrow, Georgia for a 5:30 p.m. game against Clayton State University.
