ST. AUGUSTINE –
Dillon Reed's single to center with the bases loaded in the 10
th inning ended the game as Flagler College defeated No. 19 (
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) Columbus State University 6-5 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at Drysdale Field.
Flagler improved to 19-17 overall and 13-8 in the Peach Belt. The series sweep was the second one of the season. The Saints swept Lander University earlier in the year. Columbus State dropped to 20-11 overall and 8-7 in conference play.
Frankie Martello led off the bottom for the 10
th inning for the Saints with a single to right field. Two batters later, he advanced to second on
Jimmy Peck's single to left. Cougar reliever Devin Dudal threw a pitch in the dirt that allowed both runners to move up a base. Columbus State brought the infield in and
Elliott Schubert hit a sharp ground ball to shortstop Kendall Ford. He was able to keep the ball close to him, but could not get a grip on the grounder, and the bases were loaded.
Dudal struck out the next batter and Reed came to bat. The Saints lead-off hitter hit a 1-1 flare into shallow center that dropped in front of Garrett Kirkwood and Martello scored the game-winning run.
Flagler tied the game at 5-all in the bottom of the sixth when Reed's single up the middle scored
Justin Neo from second base.
Ryan Ashworth (5-2) tossed four scoreless innings in relief to record the win. He allowed one hit and struck out four batters. He retired 12-of-the-13 batters he faced.
Aaron Anderson went 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored, and one run batted in. Peck finished 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two RBI. Neo collected two singles and stole a base.
Dudal (3-1) surrendered two unearned runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings of relief work. He fanned seven batters.
Robert Brooks went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored while Grant Berry hit two doubles and scored a run for the Cougars.
