Cooksey and Saints win pitchers’ duel Tuesday night

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College pitching struck out 12 batters, scattered six hits, and allowed an unearned run in a 2-1 win over Saint Leo University in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night at Drysdale Field.

Flagler won its fourth game in a row and improved to 20-17 overall. The Saints have won the last five-of-six games in the all-time series. Saint Leo dropped to 16-15.

Luke Cooksey (2-1) tossed six scoreless innings and fanned a career-high eight batters. He scattered four hits. Colt Mink allowed an unearned run on one hit and fanned four in 1 1/3 innings. Nick Martinez closed the game and pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to notch his third save of the year.

Dillon Reed got the Saints offense started in the sixth inning with a one-out single up the middle. Saint Leo starter Ryan Nolan (3-2) hit the next batter and then issued a walk to load the bases. Sean Lawlor lined out to right field, but was deep enough to score Reed from third.

In the seventh, Connor Laspina was hit by a pitch, stole second, and took third on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Zach Herming hit a flare to shallow center field to score Lapina with the insurance run.

Reed hit two singles and scored a run.

Nolan was the hard-luck loser in the game after he tossed 6 1/3 innings, allowed three hits and two runs. He retired nine batters on ground outs and seven more on fly outs. Nolan retired 15-of-the-first-17 batters he faced.

Corey Mumaw led the Lions with three singles.

Flagler has the weekend off and will prepare for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on April 9 at 6 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
