ST. AUGUSTINE – The Flagler College men's golf team finished in eighth place at the ninth annual Jay Jennison Cup, which concluded Tuesday (Sept. 25) at the Slammer & Squire Course (par 72; 6,939 yards) at the World Golf Village.
Topping the 15-team field was Barry University, who finished with a tournament record 830 (34-under par) and won by an astonishing 32 strokes. The Buccaneers also broke the tournament's record for lowest team round yesterday with a second round 272. Today's 276 was the lowest round recorded in the final round.
Young Harris College finished a distant second with a 2-under 862. Lander shot a 278 in the final round which allowed the Bearcats to move up six spots to a third place finish with an 868.
Jorge Garcia of Barry led the 84-man field wire-to-wire as he broke the tournament's 54-hole score with a 12-under 204. He beat the old record, held by two golfers, by three strokes. Garcia's teammate, Daniel Faccini finished in a tie for second place with Auugst Lindvall of USC Aiken. Both finished with a 7-under 209. Tyler Bakich of Barry finished fourth with a 5-under 211. Rounding out the top five was Bryson Boyette of Barton with a 4-under 212.
Juan Iturra led all Flagler players with an even par 216 and finished in a tie for 11
th place. He shot a 72 in all three rounds.
Charles Collings finished in a tie for 17
th place with a 2-over 218 and
Mauro Baez shot a 4-over 220 and tied for 26
th place.
Niklas Grotterud carded a 14-over 230 and
Chun Yan Leong rounded out the team with a 17-over 233.
Patten Williams led Flagler's four individual players with a 17-over 233.
Mitchell Bowlin finished with an 18-over 234.
Luke Dougherty (236) and
Gonzalo Miquelarena (244) completed Flagler's individuals.
Flagler will participate in the Golfrank Invitational Oct. 8-9 at Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
