Box Score ST. AUGUSTINE –
Jason Moore's single in the bottom of the eighth inning drove home the game winning run as Flagler College rallied to defeat Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University 6-5 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday night at Drysdale Field on "Ashley Daniel Night."
Flagler improved to 28-12 overall and 4-1 on Wednesday nights. The Saints have won six of the last seven games against their old rivals. Embry-Riddle fell to 10-23 overall.
Trailing 5-4 going into the bottom of the seventh,
Aaron Anderson led off with a single down the left field line off reliever Dominic Jeancola. Two batters later,
Steven DiPuglia singled to center, but Anderson was thrown out trying to reach third base. DiPuglia took second on the throw. Pinch hitter
Ja'Kobi Dasher ripped a double to right field to score DiPuglia with the game-tying run.
In the bottom of the eighth with the score still tied. Aidan Brady (0-5), Embry-Riddle's fourth pitcher of the evening, walked the leadoff hitter,
Dillon Reed. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Frankie Martello and then scored on Moore's single to left-center.
Ethan Jones (5-0), who entered the game in the seventh, retired the first two batters in the ninth, but Joe Lucas singled through the right side to keep the Eagles hopes alive. Jimmy Jones III came on to run for Lucas. Kyle Guttveg followed and he hit a 3-2 pitch through the right side, just underneath Anderson's glove, into shallow right field. Jones, who was moving on the pitch scampered all the way around and was waved around third base. Flagler second baseman
Ethan Crout unleashed a throw to home plate which just beat Jones to the plate to end the game.
Jones tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings and scattered three hits and three strikeouts.
Jett Walsh started and tossed four-plus innings. He allowed five runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
DiPuglia went a perfect 4-for-4 to pace the 17-hit attack. He finished with a double, two runs scored and two runs batted in. Anderson went 2-for-3 with a double and he scored a run. Crout, Martello and
Jimmy Peck each collected two singles.
Brady tossed the ninth for the Eagles and allowed one run on one hit and he walked a batter.
Cody Habig went 2-for-4 with a triple and he scored a run while driving in another. Cody Bogart belted a solo home run in the third inning and also hit a double. He scored two runs.
Flagler ventures out on the road again and will face the Peach Belt Conference leader, No. 13 (
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) Georgia College. The three-game series begins Friday (April 13) at 6 p.m.
NOTE: Flagler wore pink uniform tops to show its support of breast cancer awareness and in remembrance of Ashley Daniel who passed away in 2011 after her battle with breast cancer.
