Genel Sturgeon and
Megan Hooks each recorded double-doubles but it wasn't enough as Flagler College fell 3-2 (26-24, 27-25, 15-25, 18-25, 15-10) to the University of Montevallo in a Peach Belt Conference volleyball match Friday night at Flagler Gymnasium.
Montevallo won its seventh consecutive match and improved to 9-4 overall and 2-0 in the Peach Belt. Flagler dropped to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
Sturgeon finished with a season-high 17 kills and added 15 digs for her fifth double-double of the year. Hooks recorded 14 kills, hit .429 and collected 12 digs for her third double-double of the season.
Sara Davis added 12 kills and five block assists while
Ashley Cheewah tacked on 12 kills and two total blocks.
Amelia Morgan tallied a season-best 58 assists while
Caitlyn Kovach collected a team-high 21 digs.
The Saints hit .218 for the match, their most efficient offensive output since Sept. 7 vs. UNC Pembroke.
Chandler Cooper led a balanced scoring attack for the Falcons with 15 kills. Rebekah Phelps recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs. Phelps also added four total blocks. Kristy Bohan added 11 kills and four block assists while Sarah Guidry finished with a double-double of her own with 10 kills and 17 digs. Briana Marquez locked up a double-double with 46 assists and 12 digs while Carissa Bell paced the defense with 21 digs.
The first set featured 19 ties and 11 lead changes. The Saints fought off the first set point with a kill from Sturgeon to knot the score at 24-all, but two kills by Guidry got Montevallo the win 26-24 in the first set.
In the second set, Flagler trailed 24-23, but managed to tie the set at 24 on a kill by Hooks, and then at 25 after another Hooks kill. But Chandler Cooper and Kristy Bohan recorded consecutive kills and Montevallo escaped with a 27-25 win.
In the third set, the Saints opened up a 10-6 score with an 8-3 run and went on to win 25-15. Davis paced Flagler with six kills on 11 errorless swings to hit .545.
Flagler hit a red-hot .323 in the fourth set and held Montevallo to a .000 hitting percentage to win 25-18. The Saints closed the set on a 7-2 run and was aided by a couple of kills by
Taja Valmyr.
In the deciding set, Flagler fell behind 5-1 but managed to close to 8-7 after a double-block by Valmyr and Davis. The Falcons recorded the next four points and went on to win 15-10 after a Katie Best kill.
Flagler hosts Columbus State University tomorrow (Sept. 27) at 2 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium in another conference match.
