Box Score FLORENCE, S.C. –
Jonny Cosgrove converted a penalty kick in the 56
th minute and that would be all that Flagler College would need to edge past Francis Marion University 1-0 in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer opener for both teams on a soggy Saturday night at Hartzler Field. The start of the game was delayed by lightning.
Flagler remains undefeated at 3-0-1 overall and Francis Marion suffered its first defeat and fell to 3-1-0.
The Patriots' Peter Beniseau was whistled for a hand ball in the box to set up Cosgrove's penalty try. Cosgrove's successful try was his team-leading fifth goal of the season and he is a perfect 2-for-2 in penalty kicks.
The two teams played a scoreless first half with Flagler out-shooting Francis Marion 8-5.
FMU's Jayden Doyle had a shot inside the box in the 52
nd minute, but it was saved by a Flagler player to keep the game scoreless.
Lex Craggs recorded his second shutout of the season and posted seven saves. Mike Warn tallied three saves for the Patriots.
Both teams combined for 26 shots, 13 apiece. The Saints held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Both teams each committed 15 fouls.
Tonight was the first of four consecutive road matches. Up next for Flagler will be another conference road test, against Clayton State University, Friday (Sept. 19) at 7:30 p.m.
