Flagler loses in extra innings to Armstrong

Box Score ST. AUGUSTINE – Lead off walks are often a pitcher's worst nightmare. That was the case this afternoon as Armstrong Atlantic State University completed a Peach Belt Conference three-game sweep of Flagler College with a 3-2 win in 10 innings Sunday afternoon at Drysdale Field.

Armstrong extended its winning streak to seven games and improved to 22-14 overall and 13-11 in the Peach Belt. Flagler lost its ninth game in a row and fell to 18-24 overall and 9-18 in conference play.

The Saints are far from eliminated from the postseason. They have three games remaining while almost the entire league has six games left. Only one game in the win column separates Flagler from seventh-place University of Montevallo, who owns the tiebreaker over the Saints. The next two teams have eight wins.

Zach Lance drew a lead-off walk for Armstrong in the top of the 10th inning. He was bunted over to second base. Paul Jeanot came in to replace Michael Hanke (0-1), the second pitcher of the day for Flagler. Jeanot walked Matt Wisniewski, but the fourth ball bounced in front of the plate and went to the backstop allowing Lance to advance to third with one out. Justin Ratte took the hill after that and got Dalton Johnson to hit a sharp grounder to Andrew Brodbeck. He flipped the ball over to get Wisniewski at second, but they could not complete the double play. Lance scored to give the Pirates a 3-2 lead.

The Saints were retired in order in the bottom of the 10th.

Flagler struck first when Brodbeck led off the fourth with a triple into the right field corner. He scored on Joe Post's grounder. Armstrong shortstop Tyler Avera threw the ball away allowing Post to reach.

Post hit an RBI single in the fifth to give Flagler a 2-0 lead.

But the Pirates answered in the sixth when Johnson hit a home run off the right field foul pole. Cody Sherlin hit an RBI single in the eighth to the score.

Tyler Green (2-2) tossed four innings in relief to earn the win. He allowed just one hit, walked two and struck out two. Justin Adkins started and lasted six innings, allowed seven hits and two runs. He walked two and fanned six.

Sherlin singled twice and collected one run batted in. Johnson went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.

Hanke was the hard-luck loser on the hill. He tossed 4.1 innings in relief, allowed two hits, two runs, walked one and struck out five.

Brodbeck went 3-for-5 with the triple and he scored a run.

Flagler returns to the field on Tuesday (April 15) at Florida Tech in Melbourne in a 6 p.m. non-conference game.
