Box Score ST. AUGUSTINE – Armstrong Atlantic State University put a damper on a festive Friday night at Drysdale Field as it downed Flagler College 7-4 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game.
Prior to the start of the game, Flagler's Director of Athletics
Jud Damon received the Bob Frederick Sportsmanship Award - an award that was officially announced last August. Sportsmanship is one of the founding principles of the NCAA. The award honors the efforts of student-athletes and administrators who work to protect the integrity of the game and create an even and welcoming playing field for all student-athletes and fans.
Armstrong extended its winning streak to five games and improved to 20-14 overall and evened its conference record at 11-11. The Pirates extend their winning streak over the Saints to 10 games. Flagler lost its seventh game in a row and dropped to 18-22 overall and 9-16 in conference play.
After both team plated two runs in the fifth, Armstrong answered with a three-run sixth. The Pirates sent eight men to the plate in the frame. After a one-out walk and a single got the rally started, Ryan Patterson's base hit up the middle scored Clayton Miller from second to give Armstrong a 3-2 lead. A walk loaded the bases and Matt Wisniewski hit a dribbler up the third base line that stayed fair and another run scored. Patterson scored on a ground out to give the Pirates a 5-2 lead.
The Saints got one run back in the seventh when
Nick Kranick belted a solo home run to cut the deficit to 5-3.
But once again, the Pirates answered the Saints tally. R.J. Dennard led off the inning with a single to right and then Patterson lofted a ball on the left field line that a diving
Lorenzo Butler could not corral. Zach Lance dropped down a sacrifice bunt, but the throw from Flagler third baseman
Todd Juliano soared over
Skylar Fox's head at first base allowing both runs to score and Lance made it all the way to third base. Lance later scored on a wild pitch.
Flagler was able to score a run in the ninth.
Ryan Good (5-3), who was making just his third start of the season, tossed seven innings, scattered six hits, allowed three runs, walked five and struck out eight batters. Good has been the Pirates' closer this season. Justin Adkins tossed one scoreless inning and struck out two batters.
Dennard went 3-for-5 with a double and he scored two runs. Patterson singled twice, scored a run and drove in another.
Danny Brown (2-3) tossed 7.1 innings, surrendered eight hits and six earned runs, walked three and struck out a season-high eight batters.
Kranick went 3-for-3 with the solo homer, two runs scored and two runs batted in.
Lorenzo Butler singled twice and drove in a run.
The Saints left 14 men on base.
The same two teams meet tomorrow (April 12) at 2 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
