Box Score 2 SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Flagler College rallied to defeat Wingate University 4-2, but the suffered a tough 12-11, eight-inning loss to Alderson-Broaddus University in the nightcap on Friday evening in the Mid-South Classic at Tyger River Park.
Flagler is now 11-13 on the season.
In the opener, trailing 2-1, the Saints struck for two runs in the fifth inning to take the lead. An RBI single by
Molly Whittington tied the game and
Lauren Bessent's RBI-single later in the inning gave Flagler a 3-2 lead.
An unearned run in the seventh gave the Saints the insurance they needed.
Kalyn Loverich (6-4) went the distance, scattered seven hits, allowed one earned run and struck out three batters to pick up the win in the circle.
Bessent singled twice and drove in a run. Melaine Oliver went 2-for-3 with a triple, a run scored and she knocked in a run. Whittington singled, doubled, scored two runs and drove in another.
Taylor Bates (4-3) took the loss for the Bulldogs. She allowed seven hits, three earned runs, walked a batter and struck out another.
Alexis Burrell singled twice and scored a run.

In the nightcap, Kylee Gaspar's RBI-single in the top of the eighth was enough to lead the Battlers' to a 12-11 win.
Alderson-Broaddus took a 9-4 lead in the third inning, but Flagler scored four runs in the home half to close to within a run, 9-8.
Cristina Caravano hit a two-run single in the frame and
Malloree Escue had a two-run pinch it single to account for the runs.
The Battlers took a three-run lead (11-8) after plating two runs in the top of the fifth.
The Saints countered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to knot the score at 11-all. Oliver hit a two-run single in the inning to tie the game.
According to the rules of the tournament, if the score is tied after seven innings, the last out of the previous inning is placed at second base in what is called the international tiebreaker. Flagler was able to retire the first batter, but Gaspar was able to single home Victoria Patterson to give Alderson-Broaddus the lead.
Maddy Murphy started at second base for Flagler in the home half of the eighth inning.
Mackenzie Conley sacrificed her over to third. Oliver reached on an error by the catcer, but Murphy could not advance. Megan LaFon (2-2), the Battlers' third pitcher of the game, retired the last two batters to preserve the win.
LaFon tossed six innings in relief, scattered seven hits, allowed three earned runs, walked two and struck out four to earn the win.
Gaspar singled three times, scored two runs and drove in the winning run. Whitney Brown singled twice.
Tinsley Smith (1-4) took the loss in relief for the Saints. She tossed 5.2 innings, allowed eight hits, two earned runs, walked two and fanned three.
Darcey Cochran collected two singles and scored two runs. Murphy singled, doubled, and knocked in three runs. Oliver singled twice and drove in two runs.
Flagler takes on the University Mount Olive at 10 a.m. on Saturday and then faces Lincoln Memorial University at 4 p.m.
