No. 24 Barry sweeps Flagler in season opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – No. 24 (NFCA Division II Top 25) Barry University swept a non-conference softball doubleheader over Flagler College 5-1 and 8-4 in the season opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Buccaneer Field.

With the Buccaneers leading 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning, Camille Czarnecki, the starting pitcher, helped out her own cause by hitting a bases loaded sacrifice fly. That was all of the offense she needed as Czarencki (1-0) tossed four innings and scattered three hits to pick up the win. She allowed one earned run and collected two strikeouts. Taylor Sabol tossed the final three innings to earn the save.

Julie Brito singled, doubled and drove in a run for Barry.

Christen Moon hit a sacrifice fly for the Saints in the fourth inning. Lauren Bessent singled twice while Malloree Escue hit a double.

Kalyn Loverich went the distance and allowed five hits and two earned runs.

In the second game, Barry used a four-run sixth to break open a tie game and went on to win 8-4.

Flagler trailed 4-0 going into the top of the sixth when it erupted for four runs. Mackenzie Conley belted a three-run home run and two batters later, Moon hit an RBI double to tie the game.

In the home half of the sixth, Flagler's Katelynn Smith made her debut. However she walked the leadoff hitter, Kayla Ogle, who then stole second and moved to third on a ground out. A wild pitch by Smith allowed Ogle to score with the eventual winning run. Cheyanne Head hit an RBI double later in the inning and Lexi Corrente followed with a two-run single.

Britney Pugh picked up the win in relief. She tossed one-third of an inning and allowed three hits and two runs. Taylor Sabol started and tossed six and two-thirds innings.

Corrente singled twice and drove in three runs. Head singled, doubled drove in two runs and scored one.

Katelynn Smith took the loss in relief. She tossed one inning and allowed two hits, four earned runs and walked three batters. Tinsley Smith started and pitched five innings, scattered six hits and allowed three earned runs. She walked four and fanned three.

Flagler takes on Nova Southeastern University tomorrow (Feb. 2) at 1 p.m.
