Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College got a much needed sweep of UNC Pembroke, 2-1 and 10-2, in a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Flagler Field.

Flagler improved to 27-15 overall and evened its Peach Belt record at 8-8. The sweep gives Flagler a little more breathing room as it looks to lock up one of the eight PBC Tournament berths. UNCP fell to 19-28 overall and 5-13 in conference play.

In the opener, the story of the day was Flagler starter Kalyn Loverich (12-6). She retired the first 18 batters in a row before giving up a lead-off double to Taylor Cloninger in the seventh inning. Loverich tossed a complete game two-hitter, allowed one run and fanned six.

Loverich had her struggles in that last inning. After Cloninger's double, Kaytee Wilson tried to sacrifice her to third, but Wilson reached first when Lauren Bessent could not handle Loverich's throw to first base. The throw trickled down the right field line, enough for Cloninger to score to tie the game. Later, with the runners on the corners and one out, Shelby Holland tried a squeeze bunt, but the ball dribbled back to Loverich who flipped the ball home to catcher Molly Whittington who put the tag on Wilson. Loverich retired the last batter on a tapper back to the circle.

Christen Moon led off the home-half of the seventh with a solo home run, on a 0-1 count, over the left-field fence to end the game.

Melanie Oliver singled, doubled and drove in a run for the Saints.

Natalie Klemann (6-9) took the loss in relief. She entered the game in the fifth inning and scattered three hits and struck out three, but allowed Moon's home run. Starr Gilley started for the Lady Braves and allowed one hit, one run, walked two and struck out two.

Brea Hartley had the other Lady Braves' hit, a single.

The story of the second game was errors. UNC Pembroke committed four errors which led to five unearned runs.

The damage was done in the second inning. With runners at first and second, Whittington grounded back to the pitcher, but the throw to third base to get the force pulled the third baseman off of the bag. Tori Jolley singled through the hole between third and shortstop to score the first run. That knocked starter Gilley (8-10) out of the game and Klemann came in to keep the Lady Braves close. She struck out the first batter and then got the next one to ground into a force out at home. Darcey Cochran drew a bases loaded walk and then Moon reached when her pop up to the shortstop was dropped to clear the bases.

That would be all Katie Enright (11-6) would need in a game shortened to five innings. She went the distance, allowed four hits and two runs.

Bessent singled twice while Whittington singled twice, scored two runs and had one run batted in.

Gilley lasted one-plus innings, surrendered two hit and four unearned runs.

Cloninger belted a two-run home run over the center field wall in the third.

Flagler hosts Francis Marion University tomorrow (Apr. 7) at 1 p.m. in another pivotal Peach Belt Conference doubleheader.
