Saints sweep doubleheader over Lions; Vanover hits for cycle

4/27/2013 8:59:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College rolled to a pair of easy non-conference baseball wins Saturday (April 27) afternoon over visiting Florida Memorial University at Drysdale Field. The Saints won the opener 17-2 and then took the second game 15-1. Flagler honored its eight seniors in between games and before the first game, recognized Judge John Alexander as the recipient of the J. Edward “Red” Cox Award which goes to an individual who has made a tremendous positive impact on the youth of St. Augustine.

Flagler extended its winning streak to seven games and evened its overall record to 22-22. Florida Memorial finished its season with 18 consecutive losses to give the Lions a final record of 8-46.

In the opener, Flagler junior outfielder Tyler Vanover had a day rarely duplicated in the history of the program. In fact, it had only been done twice before. Vanover became the first player to hit for the cycle since Kenny Ray pulled off the feat Feb. 20, 2007 against Valdosta State. Prior to that, Flagler Athletics Hall of Fame member John McMahon was the only Saint to hit for the cycle when he did it in 1980 against Earlham College.

Vanover got a single in the third inning, a double in the sixth, a two-run home run in the seventh and an RBI-triple in the eighth. He finished the game a perfect 4-for-4, with a hit by pitch and a walk figured in, four runs scored and four runs batted in. His runs scored, hits and total bases (10) tied the individual single game-high for the team this year.

The Lions took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the Saints answered with a pair in the bottom half. Joe Post's squeeze bunt scored Vanover and the next batter, Shaun Starnes, hit an RBI-single.

After Florida Memorial tied it in the third, Brett Moreland, one of the eight Flagler seniors, belted a two-run single and the Saints took a 4-2 lead.

Flagler put up four runs in the fourth and sixth innings to widen the gap. The Saints scored at least one run in every inning, except the first.

Mike O'Reilly (1-3), making his fourth start of the year and first since Feb. 20 at Florida Southern College, tossed five innings, scattered four hits, allowed one earned run. He walked one and fanned four batters. Danny Brown and Beau Beaudreau combined to toss four scoreless innings of relief.

Starnes, one of the eight Flagler seniors, went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and he knocked in a run. Matt Morningstar singled three times, scored a run and drove in another. Post singled twice, had two runs batted in and scored a run. Jake Jacob singled twice, collected two RBI and scored a run.

Hector Antunez (1-5) tossed three innings, allowed seven hits and seven earned runs for Florida Memorial.

Daniel Morales went 3-for-4 with a double and a run batted in.
