Flagler and Lander split high scoring twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GREENWOOD, S.C. – Flagler College and Lander University split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on Saturday (Mar. 23) at Doug Spears Field. Lander rallied late to win the opener in eight innings, 8-7, but Flagler held on to win game two, 9-8, after letting a six-run lead get away.

Flagler moved to 22-12 overall and 4-6 in the Peach Belt. Lander is now 11-20 overall and 1-9 in conference play.

In the opener, Flagler took a 7-5 lead in the top of the seventh inning when Malloree Escue belted a three-run home run with two outs.

But Lander tied the game with two runs in the home half of the seventh. Bethany Beggs hit an RBI-triple to get the Bearcats to within a run and then scored when the next batter, Chasity Davis, grounded out to tie the game at 7-all.

After the Saints were retired in order in the eighth, Hannah Gately drew a lead-off walk and then moved to second on a passed ball. She was sacrificed over to third base and Taylor Donson ended the game with an infield single to score Gately.

Mary Katherine Pegram (5-7) tossed a complete game, scattered nine hits and allowed five earned runs. She walked five and struck out three.

The 1-2-3 hitters for the Bearcats went 6-for-13 with four runs scored and four runs batted in. Donson singled, doubled, scored two runs and drove in another two. Brittney Sheriff singled twice, scored a run and knocked in a run. Beggs singled, tripled, scored a run and tallied one RBI.

Katie Enright (9-5) took the loss in relief for the Saints. She pitched the last 2 2/3 innings, allowed three hits and two earned runs. She walked four and fanned four. Kalyn Loverich tossed five innings and surrendered four hits, two earned runs, walked four and struck out five.

Escue doubled, homered, scored twice and drove in three runs. Kirstie Flink singled, doubled and drove in a run.

Flagler committed three errors which led to four unearned runs. Saints pitching walked eight batters, four of whom scored.

NOTE: The six doubles hit by Flagler tied a school single-game record.

In the second game, Flagler jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead and held an 8-2 lead through five and one-half innings. Lander erupted for a six-run sixth inning to knot the game 8-all. All six runs were unearned as the Saints committed two errors.

The Saints were able to push across a run in the top of the seventh. Christen Moon drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a ground out. Whitney Little singled to the shortstop and Moon advanced to third. After Little stole second, Flink singled to right field to plate Moon.

The Bearcats went down in order in the seventh to end the game.

Tinsley Smith (3-1) tossed six innings, allowed nine hits, one earned run and walked six to earn the win in the circle for the Saints. Enright recorded her third save of the season by pitching a perfect seventh with two strikeouts and a ground out.

Little collected four singles and scored a run. Moon went 3-for-3 with a double, scored two runs and drove in three more. Tori Jolley singled, doubled, and scored a run. Flink singled twice, scored a run and drove in a run.

Tyler Riendeau (1-2) came on in relief of starter Amanda Castain in the second inning and logged 5 2/3 innings to take the loss. She allowed nine hits, four runs and walked three.

Beggs went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Sarah Fuller hit two doubles and scored a run for the Bearcats.

Flagler's scheduled doubleheader at Newberry College on Sunday was cancelled. Flagler will head to PBC newcomer, Young Harris College, on Saturday (Mar. 29) in a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
