Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – No. 16 (NFCA/Division II Top 25) Flagler College used a five-run fifth inning to rally past Carson-Newman College en route to a 10-4 win in a non-conference softball game at the Mid-South Classic at the Tyger Sports Complex.
Flagler improved to 13-5 on the season while Carson-Newman had its eight-game winning streak snapped and fell to 15-3.
Trailing 4-3 going into the top of the fifth,
Christen Moon's RBI-single tied the game and two batters later,
Melanie Oliver drove in Moon to give the Saints a 5-4 lead. Later in the frame,
Tori Jolley socked a two-run double.
Flagler added single tallies in the sixth and seventh innings.
Kalyn Loverich (7-3) tossed four innings, scattered seven hits, allowed four runs, walked three and struck out four to pick up the win in the circle for the Saints.
Katie Enright tossed the requisite three effective innings to earn her second save of the season. She only allowed one hit and fanned three.
Lauren Bessent collected three singles while
Kirstie Flink went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and knocked in four runs. Moon singles twice, scored three runs and drove in a run.
Molly Whittington singled, homered and scored two runs.
Cassie Lyons (6-3) tossed 4 2/3 innings, allowed nine hits and four earned runs.
Kelly Hensley and Jessica Morgan each singled twice for the Eagles. Brittany Hefner hit a two-run home run in Carson-Newman's four-run third inning.
Flagler will take on a familiar foe in Lenoir-Rhyne University at noon tomorrow (Mar. 2) and will follow with Erskine at 2 p.m. Flagler and Lenoir-Rhyne met for the Savannah Regional title last year and the Saints won to advance to Dahlonega for the Super Regional.
