Flagler rallies for a pair of wins over North Georgia

3/16/2013 9:43:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College rallied from a pair of deficits to sweep a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader from the University of North Georgia Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field. Flagler won the opener 8-4 and out-slugged North Georgia in the second game 16-10.

Flagler snapped a seven-game losing streak and improved to 11-14 overall and 4-10 in the Peach Belt. North Georgia had its three-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 7-14 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

In the opener, North Georgia took a 4-0 lead when it scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Jesse Strickland hit an RBI-double and later scored on Kenny Bellevance's single.

Flagler cut the deficit in half in the home half of the fifth. Matt Morningstar hit a sacrifice fly and Jake Hanson hit an RBI-double to get Flagler back in the game.

Flagler would complete the rally with a three-run sixth. Brett Moreland and Tyler Vanover drew back-to-back walks to knock starter Taylor Keinat out of the game. Nick Kranick bunted both runners into scoring position and Jay Laurienzo followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Moreland. Later in the inning, Mitch Okey hit a two-run single to give Flagler a 5-4 lead.

Danny Brown (2-3) took over from there for Flagler. He retired the last nine of 10 batters he faced. Brown tossed his first complete game, scattered nine hits, allowed four runs and struck out six batters.

Flagler added three more runs, on just one hit, in the seventh inning. Hanson led off the inning with a triple. He was later erased when he was caught in a rundown on a ground ball. But Flagler scored a run on a fielder's choice, a bases loaded walk and a ground out.

Hanson went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and he knocked in a run. Andrew Brodbeck singled twice, scored twice and drove in a run.

Chris Cobb (1-2), the first reliever for North Georgia, tossed 1 1/3 innings, allowed three hits and four runs to pick up the loss.

Tremayne Toorie went 2-for-3 with a solo home run. Bellevance singled twice and drove in two runs. Devin Gearhart singled, doubled and scored a run while Jake McCurry singled, tripled and scored a run.

In the second game, UNG sprinted out of the gates to score seven runs in the first two innings, including six alone in the second.

But like the first game, Flagler dug itself out of a hole. Flagler scored five unearned runs in the bottom of the second as it took advantage of two North Georgia errors. Moreland had a bases clearing triple into the right field corner and just like that, UNG's 7-0 lead was reduced to 7-5.

North Georgia lead 8-7 going into the bottom of the sixth, but Flagler sent 10 men to the plate and scored seven runs, again all unearned due to three miscues by North Georgia.

Brandon Agar (2-3) came on in relief of starter Clint Spratlin to start the sixth inning. Justin McKenna reached first on a fielding error by UNG shortstop Gearhart and then advanced to second on a wild pickoff attempt by Agar. Jake Jacob reached on a sacrifice bunt, but Strickland, the UNG third baseman, threw the ball away allowing Jacob to be safe. Jacob stole second and Moreland was intentionally walked to load the bases. The next four Saints got hits, including Kranick's two-run single which put Flagler ahead 10-8, and later, Joe Post belted a two-run home run and Flagler jumped out to a 14-8 lead.

Flagler added two more runs in the seventh en route to the 16-10 win.

Tyler Ward (2-0) picked up the win in relief. He tossed 4 1/3 innings, scattered six hits and allowed one run. Ward induced seven ground outs. Mike O'Reilly tossed the last three innings to pick up his first save of the season. He allowed two hits and two unearned runs.

Jacob collected three singles, scored three runs, drove in two more and stole two bases for Flagler. Vanover went 2-for-5 with a home run, scored twice and he knocked in three runs. Chace Mitchell singled, doubled, scored three runs and drove in two more. Post went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, drove in three runs and scored twice.

Agar pitched one-third of an inning, surrendered four hits and allowed seven unearned runs for North Georgia.

Toorie went 3-for-5 with a home run, four runs batted in and he scored twice. Bellevance collected three singles, scored two runs and drove in another.

The same two teams meet tomorrow (Mar. 17) at 1 p.m. at Drysdale Field on “Tim Barnwell Little League Day.”
