No. 13 Flagler splits conference opener

2/17/2013 7:40:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. AUGUSTINE – No. 13 (NFCA/Division II Top 25) Flagler College split a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader with Georgia College on Sunday afternoon at Flagler Field. The Saints won the opener 9-6, but the Bobcats won the second game, 3-1.

Flagler is now 9-2 on the season and 1-1 in the Peach Belt. Georgia College moved to 8-4 and 1-1 in league play.

In the opener, Flagler used a six-run second inning and held on for the 9-6 win.

After both teams scored two runs in each half of the first inning, the Saints took advantage of three Bobcat errors to score all six runs with two outs. Malloree Escue struck the biggest blow with a three-run home run and earlier in the inning, Christen Moon hit a two-run single.

Georgia College made things interesting in the sixth. Three walks and a fielder's choice to the first four batters in the inning chased Flagler starter Kalyn Loverich (5-1) from the game. Katie Enright came in to relieve Loverich and walked in the first run to cut the Saints lead to 8-5. Abi LeRoy singled home the next run to cut the deficit to two with only one out, but Enright retired the next two batters to escape any further damage.

Escue plated a run with a single to give Flagler a little more insurance.

Loverich tossed 5 1/3 innings, scattered four hits and allowed four earned runs. She walked six and struck out six. Enright picked up the save after tossing 1 2.3 innings of scoreless relief.

A run-scoring single by LeRoy added to the Georgia College lead and with runners at first and third, she took off and stole second while Frankie Walls scampered home on a delay steal and to give Georgia College a 3-0 lead.

The Saints struck for a run in the bottom of the seventh on a Moon RBI-single.

Whitney Okvist singled twice and scored a run for the Bobcats.

Tinsley Smith (1-1) went the distance for Flagler and allowed seven hits and two earned runs.

Four different Saints collected a single.

Flagler will head to Lakeland on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader at Florida Southern College at 5 p.m.
