Box Score WINGATE, N.C. – Flagler College, the No. 3 seed, broke a school record with 21 total team blocks but it just wasn't enough to knock off No. 17 (AVCA Division II Top 25) Armstrong Atlantic State University, the No. 2 seed in a semifinal match of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Friday afternoon at Cuddy Arena. Armstrong went the distance and won 3-2 (25-19, 23-25, 18-25, 26-24, 15-12) to advance to tomorrow's regional final.

Armstrong improved to 32-1 overall while Flagler wrapped up its season at 21-13.

Abby Meyers led the Saints with 10 block assists while Megan Hooks added three solo blocks and seven block assists. Ashley Cheewah added six total blocks (one solo and five assisted) as did Sophie Meyer (two solo and four assisted). The previous record was 16 total team blocks which happened twice – Oct. 16, 2007 at Florida Tech and Nov. 22 of this season against Lander University. The block assist record was broken as well. The Saints recorded 30 block assists, two more than the previous record of 28 at Florida Tech (10/16/07).

Jessica Santaniello recorded a double-double for the Pirates with 16 kills and 15 digs. Stephanie Sfara added 16 kills and nine digs while Emily Wylie finished with 14 kills and hit .314 with only three errors on 35 swings. Kristen Holmes hit a match-high .429 with 12 kills and three errors on 21 swings. Megan Pando recorded a double-double with 60 assists and 12 digs. Morgan Hill collected a match-high 16 digs.

Meyers recorded a rare double-double of 14 kills and 10 block assists. She hit .345 in the match with four errors on 29 swings. Emilee Taylor recorded her 22nd double-double of the season with 10 kills and 13 digs. Both Meyers and Taylor finished their playing career at Flagler today. Meyer, another senior, collected six kills to go along with her career-high six total blocks. Amelia Morgan tallied 27 assists.

There were a total of 31 ties and 16 lead changes in the entire match.

The first set was tight throughout. An attack error by Santaniello gave the Saints a 16-15 lead, but consecutive kills by Santaniello and Wylie along with a double-block by Wylie and Taylor Permenter gave the Pirates an 18-16 lead. After a Flagler timeout, the Pirates extended the lead after a kill by Wylie and a ball handling error on Morgan. Armstrong took the opening set 25-19.

Both teams were efficient in the second set with Flagler hitting .441 and Armstrong .343. The Saints led for most of the second set, but the Pirates took their first lead (21-20) since holding a 2-1 lead after a Morgan attack error. The Armstrong lead would be short-lived as a kill by Taylor and an attack error by Holmes gave Flagler a 22-21 lead. The Pirates tied it off the next serve, but a kill by Cheewah, thanks to a blocking error, gave the Saints a lead they would not relinquish. Cheewah finished off set point with a kill for a 25-23 win.

Flagler used an 8-1 run the wipe out a 5-4 deficit and was not threatened the rest of the set in a 25-18 win.

In the fourth set, with Armstrong serving set point, Taylor was able to break it with a kill to tie the set at 24-all. Sfara gave the Pirates its second chance at set point and Taylor followed with an attack error to end the set, 26-24. Meyers recorded six block assists in that set for Flagler.

In the fifth and final set, the Saints held a 9-8 lead after a kill by Hooks. But a kill by Santaniello and a pair off hitting errors by Flagler gave Armstrong an 11-9 lead. The Pirates closed out the set 15-12 to win the match.
