Box Score ST. AUGUSTINE – Kristen Holmes recorded a match-high 15 kills to help No. 19 (AVCA Division II Top 25) Armstrong Atlantic State University clinch its sixth Peach Belt Conference regular season title, and third straight, with a 3-1 (20-25, 25-12, 25-20, 25-23) win over Flagler College Friday night at Flagler Gymnasium.
Armstrong remains undefeated with an overall record of 23-0 and a perfect 15-0 mark in conference play. Flagler had its two-match winning streak snapped and fell to 16-10 overall and 11-5 in league play.
Holmes hit .407 for the match with just four errors on 27 swings. She added three total blocks to her line. Jessica Santaniello added 12 kills and nine digs for the Pirates. Taylor Permenter contributed nine kills and four total blocks. Morgan Hill collected 23 digs while Megan Pando tallied a match-high 44 assists.
Emilee Taylor led the Saints with 14 kills and added 10 digs for her 17th double-double of the season.
Caitlyn Kovach collected 23 digs while
Mackensie Mosley tallied 20 assists.
Ashley Cheewah recorded five total blocks.
Armstrong led the first set 10-9, but Flagler went on to score the next five points in a row with the help of two blocks by Cheewah and a kill by Taylor. Taylor record six of her 14 kills in the first set for the Saints. The Saints went on to take the first set 25-20. The Pirates hit just .029 for the set.
The Saints opened the second set with two points, but an 11-2 run by the Pirates was enough to pull away 25-12. Flagler hit -.029 and had just seven kills in the set.
The third set saw eight ties and four lead changes. After a Cheewah block tied the score at 19, a hitting error by Taylor followed by a kill from Santaniello got the Pirates back in front, 21-19. A
Jenea Reddick kill cut the deficit to one (21-20), but that would be as close as Flagler could get. Permenter and Paige Gocke blocked Taylor for set point, 25-20.
The fourth set was another nailbiter as there were 10 ties and seven lead changes. Flagler led for much of the fourth set and had a lead as big as 15-10. Trailing by one and coming out of a timeout, Taylor and
Megan Hooks recorded consecutive kills to give the Saints a 21-20 lead. The Pirates answered with kills by Holmes and Santaniello to re-take the lead, 22-21. After another Flagler timeout, the Saints tied it up again after a
Sophie Meyer kill and then a Pando ball handling error gave Flagler a 23-22 lead. The Pirates answered again with a kill by Santaniello, a double-block by Tarmenter and Gocke and then Permenter ended the match with a spike at the net.
Flagler doesn't have long to rest as it will take on No. 23 Palm Beach Atlantic University tomorrow at 1 p.m. and then Florida Southern College at 7 p.m.
