Box Score ST. AUGUSTINE - Flagler College's
Zach Shanahan has been the thorn in UNC Pembroke's side for the past two seasons. Last year he scored the final penalty in the shootout that eliminated the Braves from the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament. Earlier this year, he was fouled in the box and then converted the penalty kick early in the second half for the only goal of the match at Pembroke. Tonight (Nov. 5), Shanahan scored the match's lone goal again as he blasted in
Caleb Austin's through ball in the 67th minute as Flagler advanced in the Peach Belt Conference Men's Soccer Tournament with a 1-0 win at Saints Field.
Flagler (9-5-3), the No. 3 seed, will take on the No. 7 seed University of Montevallo who knocked off the No. 2 seed, Lander University, 2-1 in overtime tonight. The semifinal will be played Friday night at 8 p.m. at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga.
After a scoreless first half where UNCP (8-8-1) out-shot Flagler 6-4, the Saints came out on fire in the second half.
In the 51st minute,
Marco Warren just missed on a blast from 12 yards out that whizzed by the left post.
In the 67th minute, Austin corralled a loose ball around the top left corner of the box and sent a through ball across to Shanahan who was running in from the right to the far post. Shanahan then belted the ball into the back of the net.
Camp Bissell recorded his third shutout of the season as he tallied three saves. Ryan Hanson of UNC Pembroke also tallied three saves.
UNCP out-shot Flagler 13-11, but the Saints held a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. The Braves also held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Fouls were nearly evenly distributed with UNCP committing 11 and Flagler 10.
