No. 22 Flagler escapes with tie at North Georgia

10/27/2013 12:12:00 AM

Box Score DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Winning at the University of North Georgia has not been easy for Flagler College and it was the same Saturday (Oct. 26) afternoon as the two teams played 110 minutes and each team scored a goal in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match at the UNG Soccer Complex.

Flagler, ranked No. 22 (NSCAA/Continental Tire Division II Top 25), has played twice in Dahlonega and came away with a pair of one goal victories. It took a Zach Shanahan penalty kick conversion to stave off the upset bid by North Georgia.

Flagler had its six-match winning streak end, but left with an 8-3-3 overall record and finished its Peach Belt slate with a 5-2-2 record. For North Georgia, it was its second consecutive 1-1 draw and its record is now 3-11-2 overall and 1-4-2 in conference play.

The Saints have secured home field for the fifth consecutive season for the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Quarterfinal on Nov. 5. There are still conference teams with one or two matches to play.

The foul that set-up the subsequent penalty kick happened in the 80th minute. Shanahan stepped up and converted his second penalty kick of the season.

The Nighthawks struck first when Andrew Leurer's through ball found an open James Dobbin who placed the ball in the lower left of the goal in the 27th minute.

The Saints had a difficult time solving North Georgia keeper Kristopher Alonzo who turned away nine shots on frame. Camp Bissell recorded three saves for the Saints.

Flagler out-shot North Georgia 27-11, including 10-4 on goal. The Saints also enjoyed a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks. The match featured 33 fouls with 17 going against Flagler.

Flagler plays its last regular season road game on Wednesday (Oct. 30) at Coker College in a 4 p.m. kick-off.
