DAYTONA BEACH –
Dianna Craine recorded her seventh double-double with 17 kills and 15 digs to help lead Flagler College to a 3-1 (18-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-18) win over No. 8 (NAIA) Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in a non-conference volleyball match Tuesday night at the ICI Center.
Flagler snapped its two-match losing streak and improved to 7-6. Embry-Riddle had its four-match winning streak snapped and fell to 10-4. Flagler has won nine out of the last 10 meetings between the two former Florida Sun Conference rivals.
Emilee Taylor also recorded a double-double, her fourth of the season, with 15 kills and 17 digs.
Amelia Morgan also recorded her fourth double-double with a match-high 48 assists and 13 digs.
Abby Meyers hit an efficient .333 with 11 kills and only two errors on 27 swings.
Casey Gnann, Division II's lead in digs per set, collected a match-high 24 digs to pace the Saints defense.
Taylor Martin led the Eagles with a match-high 18 kills and added 14 assists. Jordan Holcomb recorded a double-double as well with 13 kills and 19 digs. Adriana Vazquez just missed out on a double-double with 43 assists and nine digs. Hannah Grey collected 22 digs.
Embry-Riddle broke open a two=point advantage with a 10-3 run sparked by a kill by Holcomb. The Eagles closed the run with five straight points coming off attack errors by the Saints and a pair of service aces. ERAU went on to take the opening set 25-18.
The second set featured nine ties and a pair of lead changes. After a Vazquez dump kill tied the score at 14-all, Flagler would go on an 8-3 run started by a kill by Craine. She recorded seven kills in the second set alone, including three in the run. The Eagles fought off the first set point, but a kill by Craine put it away for the Saints, 25-22. Craine hit .353 in the set while Taylor hit .455.
The third set was intense with 16 ties and four lead changes. Neither side held a lead larger than two points. The Saints had set point, up 24-22, but Veera Hietala kept the Eagles alive with a kill. An attack error by Craine tied the set at 24-all. Following a Flagler timeout,
Rachel Stacy recorded a kill and then Vazquez was whistled for a ball handling error and the Saints held on for a 26-24 win.
The Eagles seemed determined to force a fifth set by leading much of the fourth set. A Holcomb kill gave ERAU a 15-12 lead, but Flagler reeled off five straight points to take the lead for good. A blocking error, attack error and a service ace gave the Saints three points in the run while Craine and Taylor accounted for the other two on kills. Down 17-15, the Eagles got a point coming out of a timeout on an Erika Hinel kill. But the Saints followed with five consecutive points to put the match away and go on to win the set 25-18. Myers recorded a team-high six kills for Flagler while Martin had seven kills for Embry-Riddle.
Flagler hosts Augusta State University in a Peach Belt Conference match on Friday (Sept. 28) at 7 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
