Flagler releases 2012 schedule

5/31/2012 11:41:00 AM

ST. AUGUSTINE − Flagler College head men's soccer coach John Lynch officially released the 2012 schedule this afternoon. The Saints will play a 16-match schedule with eight home matches. In the last four years combined, Flagler has a 26-6-5 (.770) record at home.

Flagler went 17-3-3 overall last year and its 6-1-1 record in the Peach Belt Conference was the best in the league. The Saints won their first conference tournament title and advanced to the elite eight. Flagler was ranked No. 5 in the final NSCAA Division II poll, its highest finish since moving to Division II. In its first three seasons in the conference, Flagler has posted a 19-4-1 record, the best of any team in the league in that span.

Flagler will test itself early with a pair of tough teams in Coker College and Rollins College. Coker visits St. Augustine on Sept. 1 in the season opener. The Cobras hosted the second and third rounds of the NCAA Division II Tournament last year and was the top seed in the Southeast Region. Coker won the Conference Carolinas Tournament and ended the season ranked No. 18 in the final NSCAA poll.

Rollins and Flagler will renew its rivalry on Sept. 3. The Tars have won three of its last four matches against the Saints. Rollins finished No. 20 in the final poll last year and like Coker, they lost in the second round of the NCAA playoffs at home.

The Saints will hit the road for five consecutive matches. They open Peach Belt play at Francis Marion (Sept. 8) and then venture to former rival, SCAD Savannah, on Sept. 12. Flagler steps back into conference play in its next two matches with Clayton State University (Sept. 15) and league newcomer Young Harris College (Sept. 22). The road trip ends on Sept. 23 at Limestone College.

Flagler follows with three home matches. On Sept. 26, Georgia Southwestern State University visits Saints Field followed by UNC Pembroke on Sept. 29. The Saints open October with USC Aiken in a re-match of last year's PBC Tournament quarterfinal on the 3rd.

Flagler last road trip before heading into the postseason will be Oct. 6-15. The Saints travel west to face the University of Montevallo in a re-match of last year's conference tournament final. The Falcons fell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season. Flagler will face its rival in Lander University on Oct. 13. The Saints wrap up the trek with Anderson University on Oct. 15. The Trojans finished the season ranked No. 25.

Flagler closes out its regular season with three matches at home. The annual “Battle of the Saints” will take place on Oct. 20 against North Georgia College & State University. The first-ever match between Flagler and Florida Memorial University will take place on Oct. 23 while the season finale will be Oct. 26 against former rival Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

The conference tournament quarterfinals will be played Oct. 30 and the final four (Nov. 2-4) will be played at the site of the NCAA Division II Championships, Blanchard Woods Park, in Evans, Ga.
