ST. AUGUSTINE – John Sgromolo's (Fleming Island, Fla., Clay HS) sacrifice fly to center field drove home the game winning run in the eighth inning as Flagler College defeated USC Beaufort 5-4 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon at Drysdale Field.

Flagler evened its record at 2-2 while USC Beaufort had its four-game winning streak snapped at four.

Kyle Foti (Stamford, Conn., Trinity Catholic HS) led off the eighth inning with a double into the left field corner off reliever Alex Graham (1-1). Jay Laurienzo (Tampa, Fla., Santa Fe College) grounded out to second base to move Foti to third and with the infield drawn in and a 0-1 count, Sgromolo hit a high fly to center to plate Foti.

Foti gave Flagler a 2-1 lead when he belted his second home run of the season over the left field wall. Andrew Brodbeck (Palm Harbor, Fla., Dunedin HS) added to the lead when he grounded out in the fifth, scoring Charlie Stewart (Port St. Lucie, Fla., Lincoln Park Academy).

The Sand Sharks erupted for a three-run sixth inning. USCB sent nine men to the plate in the inning and hit six singles in the frame. Ty Main's bases loaded single gave USC Beaufort a 4-3 lead.

Sgromolo singled in the home half of the sixth which scored Devon Hellett (Ponte Vedra Beach,Fla., Gulf Coast CC) who had led off the inning with a double.

Jake Brandenberger (North Port, Fla., North Port HS) (1-1) picked up the win in relief for the Saints. He tossed two scoreless innings and did not allow a hit. Jake Brandenberger (North Port, Fla., North Port HS) closed the game in the ninth fanning two of the three batter he faced for his second save of the season.

Foti went 2-for-4 with a double and the home run, scored twice and drove in two runs. Sgromolo singled, doubled, and collected two runs batted in.

Graham took the loss in relief for USCB. He tossed the last two innings and allowed two hits and a run. Miles Galvin started and went four innings and scattered four hits, allowed two runs and fanned three.

Eight different Sand Sharks had a single.

Flagler hits the road this weekend for a three-game series at Palm Beach Atlantic University, starting with a 6 p.m. game on Friday (Feb. 10).
