ST. AUGUSTINE – Charlie Stewart (Port St. Lucie, Fla., Lincoln Park Academy) went 5-for-7 with a home run and four runs batted in to help Flagler College sweep Augusta State University 4-0 and 10-8 in a Peach Belt Conference opening doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field.

Flagler raised its record to 5-4 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Augusta State fell to 5-5 and 0-2 in league play.

In the opener, Stewart belted a two-run home run to right-center field to give Flagler all the offense it would need. Kyle Foti (Stamford, Conn., Trinity Catholic HS) added an RBI single in the third and John Sgromolo (Fleming Island, Fla., Clay HS) blasted a solo home run in the eighth to provide insurance.

Jonathan Armold (Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Pine Crest School) (2-1) pitched seven strong innings allowing just two hits and fanned eight batters. He retired 12 of the first 15 batters he faced and allowed just one base runner to reach scoring position. Tyler Ward (Rochester, N.Y., Alfred State College) and Drew Heifner (Kissimmee, Fla., Osceola HS) each pitched an inning in relief.

Stewart finished with three hits in the first game. He also recorded an outfield assist, throwing out a runner trying to stretch a single into a double.

Matt Smith collected a pair of singles for the Jaguars. Scott Shipman (0-2) tossed six innings, allowed seven hits and three runs.

In the second game, Foti's run-scoring triple in the seventh inning helped break an 8-all tie. The Saints added another run in the eighth for insurance. Flagler pounded out a season-high 16 hits.

Flagler held a 6-2 lead until Augusta State erupted for six runs in the fifth. The Jaguars sent nine men to the plate in the frame.

Devon Hellett (Ponte Vedra Beach,Fla., Gulf Coast CC) singled twice, drove in a run and scored three times. Foti went 2-for-4 with the triple, two RBI and scored a run. Brett Moreland (Charles Town, W.Va., Frederick CC) singled, doubled, scored twice and knocked in a pair of runs. Nate Fudala (Cincinnati, Ohio, Turpin HS) singled twice and scored twice. Stewart singled twice, scored a run and drove in two while Nick Radomski (Ocala, Fla., College of Central Florida) singled twice and drove in a run.

Jake Brandenberger (North Port, Fla., North Port HS) (2-1) earned the win in relief after tossing 2.2 innings. He allowed one hit and one run. Max Rusch (Fargo, N.D., Des Moines Area CC) closed out the game by pitching the last two innings to earn his third save of the season. He did not allow a hit and retired three-of-the-six batters he faced by strike out. 

Flagler and Augusta State will wrap up the three-game series tomorrow (Feb. 19) at 2 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
