GREENWOOD, S.C. –
Dianna Craine led a balanced scoring attack with a match-high 15 kills and 16 digs to help lead Flagler College to a 3-0 (25-23, 25-12, 25-23) sweep of Lander University in a Peach Belt Conference women's volleyball match Saturday afternoon at Horne Arena.
Flagler wraps up its regular season at 20-9 overall and a 12-2 mark in the Peach Belt. It is the 12th consecutive season Flagler has won 20 or more matches. Regardless of what happens in today's Armstrong-USC Aiken match, Flagler will be the No. 2 seed in next weekend's PBC Tournament at Flagler Gymnasium. Lander ended its regular season with a 14-16 overall mark and went 6-8 in league play. There is a possibility of four teams holding a 6-8 record in conference action by the end of today.
Emilee Taylor added 10 kills and 13 digs while
Amelia Morgan was the third Flagler player with a double-double as she tallied 43 assists and added 10 digs.
Rachel Stacy chipped in with nine kills and
Crystal Niederriter contributed nine kills and three blocks assists.
Casey Gnann collected a match-high 32 digs.
Tarryn Angermeier led the Bearcats with 13 kills. Kaitlyn Harrison paced the defense with 22 digs and Jessica Register recorded a double-double with 30 assists and 15 digs.
Flagler jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the first set only to have Lander rally back and tie it at 17-all on a hitting error by Niederriter. The Saints took the lead for good (21-20) on Taylor's kill. The Bearcats were able to fight off the first set point, but Niederriter ended the set with a kill and Flagler won 25-23.
The Saints went on a 6-0 run to break open a two-point lead and run away with the second set, 25-12. Flagler hit .289 and held Lander to a .000 hitting percentage.
The third set saw seven ties and two lead changes. A kill by Craine gave Flagler its largest lead of the set (22-17) and later, a Niederriter kill set-up match point for the Saints (24-19). But the Bearcats proved to be a stubborn team and reeled off the next four points to draw to within in one, 24-23. A kill by Niederriter ended the match.
Flagler will take on the No. 7 seed, which will be a team to be determined later, in the quarterfinal round of the PBC Tournament on Friday (Nov. 16) at 4 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
