Sailfish use balanced attack to down Saints, 3-1

WEST PALM BEACH – Three players recorded 10 or more kills to help lead Palm Beach Atlantic University to a 3-1 (21-25, 25-13, 25-21, 25-13) win over Flagler College in a non-conference volleyball match Wednesday night at Rubin Arena.

PBA improved to 27-3 overall while Flagler fell to 15-7. The Sailfish won all three matches this year against the Saints.

Mariela Quesada recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs while Elly Raush added 14 more kills for PBA. Faith Rohn came off of the bench to add 10 kills. Melissa Buckingham and Rachael Holehouse each collected 16 digs while Becca Acevedo tallied 48 assists and just missed out on a double-double with nine digs.

Emilee Taylor led the Saints with 13 kills. Casey Gnann collected 15 digs while Amelia Morgan tallied 32 assists.

Flagler recorded 14 service errors.

In the first set, the Saints hit .433 with 14 kills on just error in 30 swings. Conversely, the Sailfish hit .167 with 10 kills and five errors on 30 swings. Flagler went on an early 5-0 run to wipe out a 7-4 Palm Beach Atlantic lead and never looked back in a 25-21 win.

PBA hit a sizzling .464 in the second set and never trailed. Raush recorded six of PBA's 17 kills in the set. The Sailfish won handily, 25-13.

The third set was highly competitive with eight ties and four lead changes. A double-block by Abby Meyers and Morgan on Raush tied the set 17-all, but back-to-back kills by Stephany Brown and Quesada gave PBA a lead it would not relinquish in a 25-21 win.

In the fourth set, a solo block by Dianna Craine knotted the score 7-all, but the Sailfish went on a 14-2 run en route to a 25-13 win to capture the match.

Flagler returns to conference play on Friday (Oct. 26) against Francis Marion University at 7 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
