ST. AUGUSTINE –
Treva Mason (Orlando, Fla., West Orange HS) recorded her third double-double of the season with 12 points and a season-high 20 rebounds to help Flagler College snap a seven-game losing streak and edge Georgia College 59-57 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.
Flagler improved to 2-10 overall and 1-5 in the Peach Belt. Georgia College suffered its fifth consecutive loss and dropped to 2-10 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
Mason's 20 rebounds was just one shy of Flagler's single-game record of 21 held by Heidi Nissen against Edward Waters College on Feb. 11, 1991.
Charlsea Owen (St. Augustine, Fla., Pedro Menendez HS) scored a season-high 15 points while
Taye'Lor Trotter (St. Petersburg, Fla., Lakewood HS) came off the bench to provide 14 points. She also sank four 3-pointers, including one with 30 seconds left in the game to give Flagler a 58-57 lead.
Latesha Johnson (St. Petersburg, Fla., Lakewood HS) added seven assists and five steals.
Flagler out-rebounded Georgia College 48-36 and grabbed 27 offensive boards which led to 18 second chance points.
Shanteona Keys scored a game-high 24 points for the Bobcats. She made 8-of-13 from the field and was 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Krysta Lewis chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds.
The game featured 10 ties and 12 lead changes.
The Bobcats led for most of the first half until Trotter sank a trey with 14 seconds left in the first half to give the Saints a 29-27 lead.
Flagler used a 12-2 run midway through the second half to take the largest lead of the game, 50-43, with 5:53 left. Georgia College followed with a 10-2 run of its own to take a brief 53-52 lead after Keys made a pair of free throws. A layup by Mason gave the lead back to Flagler, 54-53, but Keys answered with a pair of layups to give the Bobcats a 57-54 advantage with 1:16 to play.
After a missed layup by Owen, Mason grabbed the rebound and was fouled on the put-back attempt. She made her first free throw, but missed the second.
Marie Taylor (Inverness, Fla., Lecanto HS) grabbed the errant free throw shot and found Johnson for a jumper, but the shot clanged off the rim and Ernisha Dorsey corralled the rebound. She was quickly fouled and put on the line with 36 second left. She missed her free throw attempt and Mason gathered in the rebound. Shortly thereafter, Trotter pulled up and drained a 3-pointer to give the Saints a 58-57 lead.
Belinda Schaafsma missed a 7-foot jumper which would have given the Bobcats a lead with 19 seconds left, and Mason grabbed the rebound. Georgia College used two quick fouls and
Shakia Roche (St. Augustine, Fla., Allen D. Nease HS) turned the ball over with nine seconds left. Donley's shot with five second left bounced off the rim and Roche grabbed the rebound in the corner where she was fouled. She made the first free throw in the one-and-one. Donley grabbed the errant second shot, and desperate half-court attempt at the buzzer fell short.
Flagler hosts Francis Marion University on Wednesday (Jan. 11) at 5:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
