Clayton State opens second half on 16-0 to pull away from Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE – No. 2 (USA TODAY ESPN Division II Top 25) Clayton State University used a 16-0 run to open the second half to defeat Flagler College 80-44 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Thursday night at Flagler Gymnasium.

Clayton State extended its winning streak to 14 games and improved to 17-1 overall and remained undefeated in conference play through seven games. Flagler suffered its fourth consecutive loss and dropped to 2-14 overall and 1-8 in conference play.

Shacamra Jackson led the Lakers with a game-high 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Drameka Griggs and Shannon Smith came off the bench to add 24 points and 13 rebounds. Tanisha Woodard tacked on 10 points, nine rebounds, handed out six assists and blocked three shots.

The Lakers shot 52.6% (20-38) in the second half. Clayton State missed its first 10 shots from the field in the game, and struggled to a 25.6% (10-39) mark in the opening half. The Lakers dominated the paint, out-scoring the Saints 50-20, and held a 56-37 edge in rebounding. The Lakers also held a 24-4 advantage in scoring points in transition. Clayton State forced 28 Flagler turnovers and converted them into 26 points.

Charlsea Owen (St. Augustine, Fla., Pedro Menendez HS) tallied a team-high 10 points, grabbed five rebounds, and added three assists and two steals to her line. Treva Mason (Orlando, Fla., West Orange HS) contributed seven points and four rebounds. Jen Knurek (Orlando, Fla., Lake Mary HS) came off the bench to provide six points and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Saints opened the game with a pair of free throws and a steal by Taye'Lor Trotter (St. Petersburg, Fla., Lakewood HS) led to a Mason layup to give Flagler a 4-0 lead. Flagler held a 20-17 lead with 6:16 to play after Rachel Brown (Clearwater, Fla., Clearwater HS) banked in an 8-foot jumper.

Woodard sank a 3-pointer the next time down the court for Clayton State to tie the game at 20 and then Jackson scored on the first of two consecutive fast break layups by the Lakers.

Owen sank a 3-pointer with six seconds remaining in the half to tie the game at 30-all.

Jackson sank a 10-foot jumper to open the second half which sparked the 16-0 run which lasted 4:44.

Flagler hosts the University of Montevallo on Saturday (Jan. 21) at 1:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
