FLORENCE, S.C. − The Flagler College softball team swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Francis Marion University Saturday afternoon at the FMU Softball Field. Flagler won the opener 6-0 and took the nightcap 5-1.

Flagler extended its winning streak to four games and improved to 37-13 overall and 11-7 in the Peach Belt. Francis Marion suffered its third consecutive set-back and fell to 22-19-1 overall and 7-11 in conference play. With the sweep today, Flagler is guaranteed a spot in next weekend's Peach Belt Conference Tournament in Florence.

In the opener, Kalyn Loverich (St. Johns, Fla., Bartram Trail HS) (13-4) and Donna Munafo (Satellite Beach, Fla., Brevard CC) combined on a two-hit shutout and Tori Jolley (Keystone Heights, Fla., Keystone Heights HS) provided all the offense the Saints would need with an runs scoring single in the first inning.

Alona Personius (Lake Stevens, Wash., Florida State College-Jacksonville) capped the scoring with a two-run home run to left field in the seventh inning. The homer was Personius' ninth of the season which broke the previous record of eight, held by Heather Hill in 2009 and 2010.

Loverich tossed four innings and only allowed two walks and struck out a pair. After allowing the leadoff hitter to reach on an error, she retired the next seven batters in a row.

Munafo pitched the last three innings and allowed two hits to earn her second save of the season.

Jolley finished the game 3-for-4 with a double and a run batted in. Personius went 2-for-4 with the home run and two RBI. Katelyn Guinsler (Williston, Fla., Central Florida CC) singled, doubled and drove in a run.

Cea Knox (11-10) tossed six-plus innings and surrendered seven hits, four earned runs, walked three and fanned three.

Knox and Tricia Sizemore each singled for the Patriots.

In the second game, Lauren Bessent (Jacksonville, Fla., Trinity Christian Academy) belted a grand slam to left field to break a 1-all tie in the seventh inning.

Robyn Draper (Brampton, Ontario, State College of Florida) led off the seventh by reaching first base after being hit by a pitch. Brittany Simmons (Ocala, Fla., Chattanooga State Tech CC) drew a walk and Guinsler hit a single to load the bases. Bessent homered two batters later. 

Kelly Riddick (Hampton, Fla., Central Florida CC) (15-4) pitched three scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win. She scattered three hits and struck out two batters. Munafo started and tossed four innings, allowed four hits, a run and struck out six batters.

Breezy Collings (Orange City, Fla., Brevard CC) got the Saints on the board first with a solo home run to center to lead off the second inning.

Bessent went 2-for-4 with the grand slam. Guinsler singled twice.

Kayla Ellingsen (9-7) went the distance and was reached for six hits and five runs. She struck out seven batters.

Destinea Schneider singled and doubled for the Patriots.

Flagler wraps up its regular season tomorrow (Apr. 10) at UNC Pembroke with a noon doubleheader.
