SAVANNAH, Ga. − Flagler College rallied to win the opener over No. 23 (NFCA Division II Top 25) Armstrong Atlantic State University 8-6 in eight innings and then used a 10-run second inning to complete the sweep with a 17-8 win in game two in a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Pirate Field.
Flagler improved to 30-12 overall and 6-6 in the Peach Belt. By winning the opener, Flagler broke the school record for wins, 28, set last year. Armstrong Atlantic fell to 20-6 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
In the doubleheader, Flagler batted .435 with 30 hits, three doubles, six home runs, 5 runs batted in and had a .739 slugging percentage.
Alona Personius (Lake Stevens, Wash., Florida State College-Jacksonville) finished with a 1.500 slugging percentage after hitting a double and two home runs.
Breezy Collings (Orange City, Fla., Brevard CC) posted a 1.222 slugging percentage after her two home runs on the afternoon.
In the opener, the Saints trailed 6-2 going into the top of seventh until Collings belted a grand slam to knot the game at 6-all. The Pirates got a runner on base in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't score.
In the top of the eighth,
Lauren Bessent (Jacksonville, Fla., Trinity Christian Academy) socked a two-run home run down the left field line to give Flagler an 8-6 lead.
Kalyn Loverich (St. Johns, Fla., Bartram Trail HS) (11-4), who came on in relief to start the fifth inning, retired all three batters in the bottom half of the eighth to secure the win. She only allowed two hits in her four innings of work and struck out three.
Collings went 3-for-4 with her grand slam. Bessent singled, homered, knocked in two runs and scored two more.
Katelyn Guinsler (Williston, Fla., Central Florida CC) singled, doubled and scored a run while
Lauren Ely (Winter Springs, Fla., Winter Springs HS) singled twice, scored a run and drove in another. Personius hit a home run to lead off the fourth.
Megan Barnwell (12-3) pitched all eight innings and surrendered 11 hits, seven earned runs, walked four and struck out 11.
Shelby Duff went 3-for-3 with a home run, two runs batted in and scored two runs. Keela Scott also hit a home run for the Pirates.

In the second game, Flagler broke single game records for hits (19) and runs batted in (17) in a 17-8 rout. The previous record for hits was 15, done twice with the last time Mar. 4, 2010 vs. Wesley (Del.) College. The previous record for RBI was 16 in the same game vs. Wesley.
The Saints erupted for a 10-run second inning, which also broke a school record (previously nine runs done twice in 2010). Flagler sent 14 batters to the plate and one error by Armstrong Atlantic allowed nine of those runs to cross the plate unearned. Personius hit a bases clearing double and Collings followed with a two-run home run.
Kaycee Lisa (Seminole, Fla., Seminole HS) added another two-run homer later in the inning.
The Pirates cut the deficit in half with a five-run bottom of the second. Erin Billingsley hit a two-run double in the frame.
But Flagler added another run in the third, another in the fifth on a Personius home run, and five more in the sixth.
Kelly Riddick (Hampton, Fla., Central Florida CC) (12-4) tossed four innings, allowed seven hits, eight runs, walked three and fanned five to pick up the win. Loverich closed out the last two innings and surrendered three hits.
Personius went 4-for-4 with a double, home run, five RBI and scored twice. Ely singled three times, knocked in three runs and scored twice. Guinsler singled three times, drove in two runs and scored another.
Brittany Simmons (Ocala, Fla., Chattanooga State Tech CC) singled, doubled and scored three runs.
Shelby Duff (4-3) last 1.2 innings, surrendered six hits, one earned run and struck out three. Hillary Martin finished the remainder of the game and allowed 13 hits and two earned runs.
Alisa Malte hit a two-run single for the Pirates.
Flagler hosts Lynn University on Monday (Mar. 28) at 2 p.m. at Saints Field.
