ST. AUGUSTINE − No. 21 (NFCA Division II Top 25) Flagler College split a non-conference softball doubleheader with the University of Massachusetts Lowell Tuesday evening at Saints Field. Flagler rallied to win the opener 9-2 but lost the nightcap 4-3.

Flagler's record goes to 25-7 while UMass Lowell is now 7-5.

In the opener, Flagler spotted UMass Lowell a 2-0 lead before a Tori Jolley (Keystone Heights, Fla., Keystone Heights HS) double in the bottom of the third inning tied the game at 2-all.

The Saints erupted for four runs in the fourth inning. With runners on the corners and no outs, Sarah Albino (Adelaide, Australia, Florida State College-Jacksonville) dropped down a bunt and the River Hawks could not make a play anywhere. Brandy Luke (Orlando, Fla., Indian River State College) scampered home to give Flagler a 3-2 lead. Later in the inning, Breezy Collings (Orange City, Fla., Brevard CC) hit a two-run single to push the Flagler lead to three runs (5-3).

Flagler added a run in the fifth and scored two more in the sixth. Alona Personius (Lake Stevens, Wash., Florida State College-Jacksonville) belted a two-run home run off the scoreboard in left-center. 

Kelly Riddick (Hampton, Fla., Central Florida CC) (10-2) tossed four innings, allowed two hits, two runs and struck out five batters. Donna Munafo (Satellite Beach, Fla., Brevard CC) pitched the last three innings to earn her first save of the season. She allowed one hit and struck out three.

Lauren Bessent (Jacksonville, Fla., Trinity Christian Academy) went 3-for-4 with a double and scored two runs. Luke singled three times, scored a run and drove in another.

Sammy Macy (0-1) took the loss in relief. She tossed one-plus innings, surrendered four hits and five earned runs. Rachel Scafler started, and came back on in relief. She tossed five innings, allowed eight hits, three runs and struck out three.

Heather Ross hit an RBI double in the third inning for the River Hawks.

In the second game, Ross belted a grand slam in the fifth inning to wipe out a 1-0 Flagler lead.

The Saints plated a run in the fifth and one in the seventh, but stranded the tying run at third base. Flagler left a season-high 11 runners on base.

Elyssa Boris (6-3) tossed a complete game and scattered 10 hits and allowed two earned runs.

Five other UMass Lowell batters had singles.

Kalyn Loverich (St. Johns, Fla., Bartram Trail HS) (10-3) took the loss in the circle for the Saints. She pitched three innings in relief and allowed four hits, four runs and struck out three.

Bessent singled three times and scored a run while Collings singled three times, scored a run and drove in another. Personius hit a double.

Flagler will step back into Peach Belt Conference play at No. 2 North Georgia College & State University on Thursday (Mar. 17) at 2 p.m.
