ST. AUGUSTINE − No. 21 (NFCA/Division II Top 25) Flagler College swept a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader against Georgia Southwestern State University Sunday afternoon at Saints Field. Flagler held off a Georgia Southwestern rally in the opener to win 4-3 and got a no-hitter, the program's third, from freshman
Kalyn Loverich (St. Johns, Fla., Bartram Trail HS) in the second game in a 1-0 win. She also earned a save in the first game.
Flagler improves to 24-6 overall and 3-3 in Peach Belt play. Georgia Southwestern fell to 12-18 overall and 2-6 in league play.
Loverich (10-2) tossed the first no-hitter in her career as she tossed 92 pitches, walked a batter and struck out four. She retired 18 of the first 19 batters she faced, including 16 in a row, in the second game.
Breezy Collings (Orange City, Fla., Brevard CC) singled four times in the twinbill while
Lauren Ely (Winter Springs, Fla., Winter Springs HS) singled twice, doubled and scored two runs.
In the opener, the Saints jumped out to a 4-0 lead and needed all of those runs to fend off a rally by the Lady Hurricanes in the sixth inning.
Katelyn Guinsler (Williston, Fla., Central Florida CC) opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the second for Flagler.
Alona Personius (Lake Stevens, Wash., Florida State College-Jacksonville) added a run-scoring single in the third and
Tori Jolley (Keystone Heights, Fla., Keystone Heights HS) had an infield single in the fifth to plate the winning run.
Trailing 4-0 in the sixth, Robyn Butler drove in a run with a single and the Lady Hurricanes had runners at first and second with one out. Katie Mueller came in to run for Butler with Gabby Buck at the plate. Buck laced a base hit to center field, but the Flagler center fielder tripped while trying to make the catch and the ball scooted all the way to the wall. Two runs scored on the play and the tying run sat at third base with one out. The next batter walked and Loverich came on to relieve
Kristen Chapman (Jacksonville, Fla., Sandalwood HS) who started the inning in the circle for the Saints. Loverich hit the first batter, but struck out the next two to end the threat.
Georgia Southwestern stranded the game-tying run at second base in the seventh inning.
Kelly Riddick (Hampton, Fla., Central Florida CC) (9-2) picked up the win after tossing five innings. She allowed one hit, walked two and struck out nine batters. Loverich closed the final 1.2 innings, allowed one hit and fanned three to earn her first save of the season.
Lauren Bessent (Jacksonville, Fla., Trinity Christian Academy) and Ely each singled twice and scored a run for the Saints.
Jessica Martin (5-5) went five innings and surrendered eight hits and four runs.
Heather Hodge and Nichole Griffin each singled twice and scored a run for Georgia Southwestern.

In the second game, Flagler took advantage of a Georgia Southwestern miscue to score the only run of the game, in the third inning.
Ely hit a one-out double and took third on a base hit by Collings. She would take second base on the throw. Jolley flied out, but the Lady Hurricane center fielder decided to throw to home plate and the throw went up the line allowing Ely to score.
The only threat Georgia Southwestern could mount was in the seventh inning. Mason Moreland hit a grounder which was mishandled by the Flagler shortstop, to lead off the inning. Moreland was erased when the next batter grounded out to short. The next batter struck out and Buck hit a grounder to short that was bobbled for another error. With runners at first and second, Loverich got the last batter to pop up to shortstop.
Loverich retired eight batters on ground outs and nine on fly outs. Only one base runner reached second base, and that was not until the seventh inning.
Collings singled three times for the Saints.
Christie Shankle (1-7) tossed six innings, allowed six hits, an unearned run and struck out two.
Flagler hosts UMass-Lowell on Tuesday (Mar. 15) at 4 p.m. at Saints Field.
NOTE: The last no-hitter by Flagler occurred Mar. 29, 2010 vs. Lees-McRae College as
Kelly Riddick and
Brandy Luke (Orlando, Fla., Indian River State College) combined on the no-hitter. Riddick tossed Flagler's first no-hitter Feb. 13, 2010 vs. Ave Maria in a game shortened to five innings.
