ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Saint Leo University in the season opener for both teams by scores of 4-2 and 1-0 Saturday afternoon at Saints Field.
In the opener,
Tori Jolley (Keystone Heights, Fla., Keystone Heights HS) and
Lauren Bessent (Jacksonville, Fla., Trinity Christian Academy) each hit solo home runs in the fourth inning which wiped out a 2-1 Saint Leo adavantage.
Breezy Collings (Orange City, Fla., Brevard CC) hit an RBI single in the fifth for insurance.
Kelly Riddick (Hampton, Fla., Central Florida CC) (1-0) tossed a complete game, scattered six hits, allowed two runs and fanned five.
Collings singled twice and collected two RBI.
Elysha Agen and Dianne Gonzalez each had two singles for the Lions. Gonzalez drove in one of Saint Leo's two runs in the fourth after singling through the right side.
Saint Leo threatened in the sixth inning, but a Danielle Moreda groundout to Riddick ended the chance with two runners in scoring position.
Ashton Whidden (0-1) picked up the loss for the Lions. She tossed 3.1, allowed five hits and three runs.

In the second game, freshman pitcher
Kalyn Loverich (St. Johns, Fla., Bartram Trail HS) (1-0) made her collegiate debut by retiring 11-of-the-first-12 batters she faced en route to a complete game, two-hit shutout. She walked two and struck out four and only allowed three runners to reach scoring position.
Collings brought home
Lauren Ely (Winter Springs, Fla., Winter Springs HS) with an RBI double to right-center field in the first inning to provide all the scoring Flagler would need to win.
Sarah Boyd and Gonzalez were the only Saint Leo players to record a hit. Boyd singled in the fifth while Gonzales doubled in the seventh.
Megan Still (0-1) went six innings for the Lions allowing just three hits, one run and fanning three. She retired the last 10 batters in a row.
Flagler hosts Florida Tech in a non-conference doubleheader tomorrow (Feb. 6) at 3 p.m. to conclude the Flagler Saints Tournament.
