CLEARWATER − The 22nd-ranked (NFCA/Division II Top 25) Flagler College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Eckerd Triton Spring Invitational at the Eddie C. Moore Complex. Flagler lost the opener to Nova Southeastern University, 5-3, but won the second game 3-0 over Lynn University.

Flagler moves its record to 18-2. Nova Southeastern improved to 10-4 and Lynn fell to 3-12.

In the first game, the Sharks took advantage of two errors in the third inning and jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead. Sara DeMuth provided the insurance run that Nova Southeastern needed with a lead-off home run in the top of the seventh to put the Sharks up 4-1. Nova Southeastern added another run in the frame and held off a rally by Flagler in the bottom of the seventh.

Alona Personius (Lake Stevens, Wash., Florida State College-Jacksonville) socked a two-out two-run double in the home half of the seventh, but the Saints couldn't draw any closer.

DeMuth (5-2) also got the sin in the circle for the Sharks. She went the distance and scattered seven hits, allowed two earned runs and struck out nine.

Katie Kelton singled, doubled and scored a run for Nova Southeastern.

Kalyn Loverich (St. Johns, Fla., Bartram Trail HS) (8-1) tossed three innings, allowed two hits, three unearned runs and struck out four.

Personius doubled twice and drove in all three of Flagler's runs. Lauren Bessent (Jacksonville, Fla., Trinity Christian Academy) singled twice.

In the second game, Personius singled home Bessent in the top of the fist inning and that would be all the offense Flagler pitchers Kelly Riddick (Hampton, Fla., Central Florida CC) and Donna Munafo (Satellite Beach, Fla., Brevard CC) would need.

Riddick tossed three innings and allowed just two hits. Munafo (1-0) tossed the last four innings to pick up her first win at Flagler. She scattered three hits and struck out six batters.

Breezy Collings singled twice while Bessent scored two runs. Kristen Chapman (Jacksonville, Fla., Sandalwood HS) hit a double.

Carisa Cook singled twice for the Fighting Knights. Callie Darlin (1-7) tossed all seven innings, surrendered nine hits and two earned runs.
