AUGUSTA, Ga. − Flagler College and Augusta State University split a Peach Belt Conference opening doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium. Augusta State won the opener 5-3 and Flagler took the second game 7-4.

Flagler goes to 8-8 overall and 1-1 in the Peach Belt. Augusta State is now 7-8 overall and 1-1 in league play.

In the opener, back-to-back RBI singles by Jake Sutton and Andy Onufrak in the fifth inning gave Augusta State a 3-0 lead. That's all Jaguar starter Patrick Lowe (1-0) would need as he tossed five scoreless innings, allowed three hits and got the Saints to groundout 10 times.

Middle relief almost gave the lead away, but Wilson Taylor slammed the door shut in the last three innings and earned his fourth save. He scattered four hits, allowed one run and struck out three.

Casey Hanrahan had two singles and two runs batted in. 

Jonathan Armold (Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Pine Crest School) (1-2) tossed five innings, surrendered four hits, three runs and struck out three. Nate Fudala (Cincinnati, Ohio, Turpin HS) and John Sgromolo (Fleming Island, Fla., Clay HS) each singled twice.

In the nightcap, Flagler plated six runs in the eighth inning to rally for a 7-4 win. Flagler sent 10 men to the plate and got just three hits.

Trailing 4-1 going into the top of the eighth, Devon Hellett (Ponte Vedra Beach,Fla., Gulf Coast CC) greeted Augusta State reliever Joah Evans with a walk. He took second and two batters later, Jose Rohena (Tampa, Fla., St. Petersburg College) drew a walk. Evans was lifted for Rob Crosby and Evan Grandizio (Bloomsburg, Pa., Monmouth University) greeted him with a base hit to load the bases. Kyle Foti (Stamford, Conn., Trinity Catholic HS) drove in a pair with a double to center field and then Crosby uncorked a wild pitch which scored both Grandizio and Foti and Flagler grabbed a 5-4 lead. Travis Coverston (Jacksonville, Fla., Stanton College Prep) walked and Tyler Vanover (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Providence HS) singled to chase Crosby out of the game. Clint Echols came on and got Charlie Stewart (Port St. Lucie, Fla., Lincoln Park Academy) to ground out, but first baseman Matt Smith booted the ball and Coverston scored. Fudala later hit a sacrifice fly to score Vanover.

Tyler McKendree (Jacksonville, Fla., Bartram Trail HS) (2-0) picked up the win in relief after tossing two scoreless innings, scattering three hits and fanning two. Max Rusch (Fargo, N.D., Des Moines Area CC) closed the last two innings and struck out five of the eight batters he faced.

Foti hit a double, a triple, scored twice and drove in two runs. Coverston singled twice, scored once and knocked in a run while Vanover singled twice and scored a run.

The same two teams meet tomorrow at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
