ST. PETERSBURG − The Flagler College softball team pounded out 22 hits and scored 22 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Eckerd College Thursday afternoon at the Turley Complex. Flagler won the opener 11-1 in a game shortened to five innings because of the mercy rule and the Saints triumphed 11-3 in the second game.
Flagler improved to 12-0 on the season while Eckerd lost its seventh in a row and fell to 1-7.
In the opener, Flagler wasted little time in jumping ahead as
Stacy Piagno (St. Augustine, Fla., Pedro Menendez HS) socked a two-run home run in the top of the second inning to give the Saints a 2-0 lead.
Katelyn Guinsler (Williston, Fla., Central Florida CC) followed Piagno with a triple and scored on a
Lauren Ely (Winter Springs, Fla., Winter Springs HS) single.
The Tritons scored a run in the bottom of the second, but the Saints erupted for eight runs in the fifth to invoke the mercy rule.
Alona Personius (Lake Stevens, Wash., Florida State College-Jacksonville) and
Brandy Luke (Orlando, Fla., Indian River State College) each hit a two-run double in the inning.
Kelly Riddick (Hampton, Fla., Central Florida CC) (6-0) tossed four innings, allowed three hits, one run and struck out four.
Kristen Chapman (Jacksonville, Fla., Sandalwood HS) retired all three batters she faced in the fifth, including two by strikeout.
Lauren Bessent (Jacksonville, Fla., Trinity Christian Academy) singled twice and scored a run. Nine different Saints had at least one hit.
Whitney Bernier (0-3) last 4.1 innings, surrendered eight hits, seven earned runs and walked eight.
Kelly Coston hit an RBI doubled for the Tritons while Kirsten Cox and Kristen Schurr each singled.

In the second game, Flagler scored all the runs it would need, in the third inning, when
Brittany Simmons (Ocala, Fla., Chattanooga State Tech CC) belted a grand slam to give the Saints a commanding 6-0 lead.
The Tritons cut the lead in half with a three-run fourth, but the Saints plated four more in the top of the fifth.
Breezy Collings (Orange City, Fla., Brevard CC) socked a three-run home run in the frame for Flagler. She went 2-for-5 with five runs batted in and two runs scored.
Bessent singled twice, scored a run and drove in another while
Tori Jolley (Keystone Heights, Fla., Keystone Heights HS) and Piagno each singled twice and scored a run.
Kalyn Loverich (St. Johns, Fla., Bartram Trail HS) (6-0) tossed five innings, scattered three hits, allowed two earned runs and fanned five.
Donna Munafo (Satellite Beach, Fla., Brevard CC) pitched the last two innings for the Saints and allowed one hit.
Meagan Camp singled three times for the Tritons and drove in a run. Kaitlyn Dougherty (0-2) lasted just two innings and allowed five hits and four earned runs.
Flagler hosts regional-power Florida Southern College on Saturday (Feb. 19) at 2 p.m. at Saints Field.
