MIAMI SHORES − Flagler College sent 12 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs in the ninth inning to win the opener of the doubleheader against Barry University 10-1 Sunday afternoon at Buccaneer Field. Flagler completed the sweep with a 5-1 win in the nightcap.
Flagler extends its longest winning streak in the history of the program to 10 games, which is its best start ever (10-0). Barry played its first two game of the season.
In the first game, it was a pitcher's duel through the first eight innings. Flagler's
Kelly Riddick (Hampton, Fla., Central Florida CC) (5-0) had retired 23-of-the-27 batters she faced through eight, and only allowed three runners to reach scoring position. Barry's Brianna Smith (0-1) was equally tough on the Saints' batters. She only had one rough spot, the fourth, where Flagler had the bases loaded and two outs.
But it was the top of the ninth when things came apart for Smith. With the tiebreaker rule enforced, Flagler placed its last out from the previous inning at second base.
Breezy Collings (Orange City, Fla., Brevard CC) singled to left and
Alona Personius (Lake Stevens, Wash., Florida State College-Jacksonville) took third.
Tori Jolley (Keystone Heights, Fla., Keystone Heights HS) singled up the middle, scoring Personius and advanced pinch runner
Brandy Luke (Orlando, Fla., Indian River State College) to second. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners up a base,
Brittany Simmons (Ocala, Fla., Chattanooga State Tech CC) reached on a fielder's choice and Luke scored what would be the game-winning run, and Flagler led 2-0. Collings provided the big blast in the frame, a grand slam off Barry reliever Jessica Bevlin.
Riddick tossed eight shutout innings, allowed four hits and fanned seven.
Donna Munafo (Satellite Beach, Fla., Brevard CC) closed the game and gave up two hits, an unearned run and struck out a batter.
Collings went 2-for-5 with the grand slam, collected four runs batted in and a run scored.
Lauren Bessent (Jacksonville, Fla., Trinity Christian Academy)singled twice, scored a run and drove in another.
Smith tossed 8.1 innings and surrendered five hits, five earned runs and struck out eight.
Sarah Boeseker singled, doubled and scored a run for the Boccaneers. Alyssa Goldsmith singled twice.

In the second game, freshman pitcher
Kalyn Loverich (St. Johns, Fla., Bartram Trail HS) (5-0) turned in another masterful performance. She tossed a complete game, scattered six hits, allowed one run and struck out seven. Loverich had a 27.1 consecutive inning scoreless streak snapped.
Flagler took advantage of a Barry miscue to plate three runs in the second inning. Jolley and
Kristen Chapman (Jacksonville, Fla., Sandalwood HS) each reached base via a walk. Simmons reached on a fielder's choice and a Chapman was out at second, leaving runners on the corners with two outs.
Katelyn Guinsler (Williston, Fla., Central Florida CC) struck out swinging, but reached first on a passed ball.
Sarah Albino drew a bases loaded walk and the Saints took a 1-0 lead. Bessent followed with a two-run single to center.
Stacy Piagno (St. Augustine, Fla., Pedro Menendez HS) belted a two-run home run in the sixth for some more insurance.
Hannah Shy hit an infield single in the bottom of the seventh, and then scored on Amber Durkin's triple to left-center to end Loverich's scoreless streak with one out.
