Lady Gyrenes spoil Saints opener, 69-59

ST. AUGUSTINE – Shelbi Lindsey (Apopka, Fla., Lake Mary HS) scored a career-high 23 points and added seven rebounds and five steals, but it wasn't enough as Ave Maria University defeated Flagler College 69-59 in a non-conference women's basketball game Sunday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.

Ave Maria won its third consecutive game and improved to 3-1 on the season. Flagler lost its season opener. It was the first time Flagler has lost a season opener since Nov. 15, 2007 when it lost to St. Thomas University of Florida, 50-46, at Flagler Gymnasium.

Emily Huber scored 16 points and handed out seven assists to lead the Lady Gyrenes. Tamica Mora added 16 points and four steals. She also knocked down four 3-pointers. Erika Derks added 11 points and eight rebounds. Sandy Jenkins grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Ave Maria shot 42.9% (24-56) from the field in the game, including 50% (9-18) in the second half. The Lady Gyrenes out-rebounded the Saints 41-35 and turned 20 Flagler turnovers into 20 points.

Latesha Johnson (St. Petersburg, Fla., Lakewood HS) added 13 points for the Saints. Rachel Brown (Clearwater, Fla., Clearwater HS) grabbed seven rebounds and Ebonee Bell (Olathe, Kan., Olathe South HS) tallied four assists.

After a Johnson layup tied the game at 19-all, Ave Maria went on a 19-6 run over the next 7:03 to take a 38-25 lead with 1:26 left to go in the half. Huber scored five points in the run and Amy Myler added four more. The Lady Gyrenes took a 38-27 lead into the locker rooms.

The lead grew to as many as 17 (50-33) with 13:01 left. Flagler would go on a 14-6 run to trim the deficit to nine (64-55), but could not get any closer.

Flagler will go on the road next weekend for the Wingate by Wyndham Lady Pirate Classic in Savannah, Ga. On Friday (Nov. 18) Flagler takes on Anderson University at 5 p.m. and on Saturday (Nov. 19) will face Young Harris College at 1:30 p.m.
