No. 17 Armstrong defeats Flagler 3-1

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Jessica Santaniello recorded a match-high 14 kills and added nine digs as No. 17 (AVCA Division II Top 25) Armstrong Atlantic State University defeated Flagler College 3-1 (25-12, 23-25, 25-20, 25-18) in a Peach Belt Conference women's volleyball match Wednesday night at The ARC.

Armstrong remains undefeated at 17-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference. Flagler fell to 12-5 overall and 4-1 in league play. The loss snapped Flagler's 14-match win streak in regular-season conference play. Flagler had won 18 matches in a row against conference competition, which included the conference and regional tournaments. The Saints had also won eight-straight matches against the Pirates. The last time Armstrong defeated Flagler was Oct. 15, 2008, in St. Augustine, 3-1.

Brittany Wolf added 12 kills and had only two errors on 18 swings to finish with a .556 hitting percentage. Brendyce Budd and Amanda Jones each added nine kills. Stacey Davis collected a match-high 19 digs while Ashley Seal tallied a match-high 46 assists.

The Pirates hit .293 as a team and recorded 9.0 total team blocks.

Abby Meyers (Sioux Falls, S.D., SW Minnesota State U.) led Flagler with 12 kills and Dianna Craine (Oshawa, Ontario, University of Tulsa) contributed 10 kills, eight digs and four block assists. Casey Gnann (Boca Raton, Fla., Spanish River HS) collected 17 digs and Olivia Snipes (Easley, S.C., Easley HS) tallied 43 assists.

Flagler's .118 hitting percentage for the match was its lowest all season.

The Pirates got off to a quick start hitting .483 in the first set. The Saints were limited to a .115 percentage. Armstrong raced out to a 13-6 lead and didn't look back in a 25-12 win. Wolf had four kills on five errorless swings.

In the second set, the Saints enjoyed a 19-11 lead, but the Pirates stormed all the way back to knot it at 20-all on a Santaniello kill. With the score tied at 23, Rachel Stacy (Orlando, Fla., Timber Creek HS) recorded a kill and the set was clinched on a bad set by Seal. Meyers led the Saints with four kills and hit .375 for the set.

In the third set, the Pirates erased an early deficit to take a 15-14 lead and never trailed again in a 25-20 win. Armstrong hit .407 in the set and held Flagler to a .105 percentage. Leia Pittman led the way with four kills.

In the fourth and final set, after Craine's kill tied the match at 14-all, Armstrong would go on a 9-1 run to put the set away and take the match. Santaniello recorded four kills on eight errorless attempts for a .500 hitting percentage.

Flagler continues on the road for a pair of conference matches against USC Aiken on Friday at 7 p.m. and then Lander University on Saturday at 2 p.m.
