ORLANDO – The No. 21 (
Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches Poll) Flagler College men's golf team finished in eighth place at the Rollins College Invitational which concluded Tuesday at the Rio Pinar Country Club (par: 72; yards: 7001).
Flagler shot 303 in the final round and slipped back into eighth place with a 54-hole total of 896. No. 19 Newberry College shot a final round 284 to top the 11-team field with a 3-over 867. Carson-Newman College and the host school, Rollins, finished in a tie for second place with an 877. Carson-Newman came into the final round tied for first with Newberry, but shot a 294.
Spencer Cole of Rollins led the 74-man field with a 5-under 211. He won by two strokes over Matthew Campbell and Chandler Gruenmeier, both from Newberry, who shot a 3-under 213. Gruenmeier was in a tie for first with Cole entering the final round, but Cole shot a 1-under 71 in the last round while Gruenmeier shot a 2-over 73.
Joel Dahlenburg (St. Augustine, Fla., Bartram Trail HS) led the Flagler contingent with a 2-over 218 and finished in a tie for eighth place. It is Dahlenburg's second top 10 finish this fall.
Greg Mergel (Allenwood, N.J., Wall Township HS) shot an even par 72 today to finish with an 8-over 224 and tie for 24th place.
Andrew McCracken (Virginia Beach, Va., First Colonial HS) carded an 11-over 227 and tied for 34th place.
Travis Ralph (St. Petersburg, Fla., St. Petersburg College) shot a 13-over 229 and tied for 40th place.
Travis Ralph (St. Petersburg, Fla., St. Petersburg College) rounded out the Flagler scorers with a 20-over 236 and tied for 63rd place.
Christopher Hughes (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Ponte Vedra HS), playing as an individual, tied for 51st place with a 15-over 231.
Flagler will now get ready for its final fall competition, the Queens University of Charlotte Invitational, Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at TPC Sawgrass Pete Dye's Valley Course at nearby Ponte Vedra Beach.
