ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Senior center fielder Dagmar Pena (Jacksonville, Fla./U. of Tampa) belted the first pitch over the left field wall to lead off the bottom of the 10th inning as Flagler College defeated No. 19 (Collegiate Baseball Division II Top 30) North Georgia College & State University 2-1 in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon on “Senior Day” at Flagler Stadium.

Flagler concludes its regular season with a 28-22 record while North Georgia falls to 33-16.

The game dominated by the two pitchers – North Georgia's Matt Adams (0-3) and Flagler's Johnny Gaines (Jacksonville, Fla./Hillsborough CC) (8-5).

Gaines tossed all 10 innings, fanned a season-high 10 batters and scattered just five hits and allowed a run. He retired 19-of-the-last-22 batters he faced including the last seven in a row. Only four North Georgia runners reached scoring position.

Adams was the hard-luck loser as he went the distance and allowed only four hits and one earned run. He struck out seven batters. Adams had retired 16 in a row until Peña hit the home run.

North Georgia got on the board first when Chad Sage hit a solo home run to right field in the second inning.

Zach Bove (Winter Haven, Fla./Central Florida CC), Travis Coverston (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) and Payne Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) each singled for Flagler.

Maddox tied the game up in the bottom of the second when he hit a single through the left side of the infield, but North Georgia left fielder Sage misplayed the ball and it went all the to the warning track which allowed Coverston to score all the way from first base. Maddox was thrown out at the plate on the play.

Flagler and North Georgia will meet again on May 8 at Lake Olmstead Stadium in Augusta, Ga., at 11 a.m., in a quarterfinal of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.

Prio to the game, Flagler honored its six seniors: Peña, Bove, Maddox, Gaines, Jarrod Simmons (Jacksonville, Fla./Central Florida CC) and Cale Owen (Clearwater, Fla./home school). Also, Flagler passed out team awards before the game. Bove was named Offensive Player of the Year for the second year in a row. Peña was named the Newcomer of the Year, Jonathan Armold (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Pine Crest School) was tabbed as the Pitcher of the Year, John Sgromolo (Fleming Island, Fla./Clay HS) was selected as the Coaches Player of the Year and Owen and Bove were named as co-Most Valuable Players.
